Improving Training for
At-Risk Workers
Jobsite fatalities remain high for young, Hispanic construction workers
A recent report released by the American Society of Safety Engineers and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health identifies young, Hispanic construction workers as being the most at risk for being killed on the job. This is not a new trend, but continues to be a serious problem. This ethnic group was the only one to see an increase in the number of workplace fatalities in 2013.

There are a variety of compounding reasons for this terrible statistic, but the bottom line is that these workers receive very little or no job training. Employers of all sizes can take advantage of numerous resources available. A few are listed at the end of this article.

Here's an outline of the primary changes you can make to your training programs to meet the needs of young, Hispanic construction workers.

Crane Industry Services LLC recently received certification from the National Women Business Owners Corporation as a Woman Business Enterprise.

WBE status is achieved only after filing legal paperwork establishing majority ownership of a company to a female. However, earning WBE Certification provides additional credibility, as it is a third-party verification.

"WBE Certification assures businesses and government agencies that Crane Industry Services accurately represents itself as a woman-owned business," said Debbie Dickinson, CEO.

In other news, Dickinson was honored in April 2015 by the Douglas County, Georgia Charter Chapter of the American Business Women's Association as the 2015 Boss of the Year.

5 Hot Tips for Working in the Heat

During this record breaking hot summer, maintaining cool heads requires more than ice, water and shade. Remember:

  1. Increased sweat may make objects, handrails, ladders or steps slippery.  Secure items and your steps.
  2. Stay cool - physically and mentally.  Heat exhaustion kills and hospitalizes hard working people.  Big numbers on the heat index can also cause short tempers. Be patient.  Avoid hot heads.
  3. Drink responsibly.  Energy drinks are being banned from some job sites.  Drinking excessive amounts of water in a short period of time may unbalance the body's electrolytes.  Drink water often and throughout the day.
  4. Protect your eyes from the sun.  Cataracts and other eye aliments are reportedly linked to over exposure to the sun.
  5. Lightening does strike.  Storms arise quickly on hot, humid days, and are generally, short-lived.  Seek shelter before the bolts hit.
