KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Hickory Crawdads exploded for 11 runs in the first three innings, swinging their way to the 13-9 win against the Kannapolis Intimidators, before 1,270 fans at CMC-Northeast Stadium in Kannapolis on Thursday night. The 'Dads have started the second half with consecutive series wins.
The Crawdads (6-2, 42-35) started the game on fire, smacking five consecutive hits to start the top of the first and scoring six total runs in the frame against LHP Matt Lane (L, 2-1). SS Luis Sardinas led off with a double, followed quickly by four straight singles by 1B Trever Adams, who drove in Sardinas, 2B Rougned Odor, RF Jeremy Williams and LF Alejandro Selen, who plated Adams for the 2-0 lead. After a pair of strikeouts, CF Jordan Akins drove in a two with a double, followed quickly by a two-run single from 3B Nick Urbanus, capping the six-run rally for the 6-0 lead.
Hickory stretched the lead even further with five more runs in the top of the third inning. Williams led off with a double, and then trotted home on a two-run home run by Selen, making it 8-0. After C Kellin Deglan reached on an error, a fielder's choice-error combination advanced him to third and allowed DH Jorge Alfaro to reach base safely. One out later, Urbanus also reached on a fielder's choice and an error, plating Deglan and pushing Alfaro to third. An RBI single by Sardinas and an RBI sacrifice fly by Adams stretched the 'Dads lead to 11-0.
The Intimidators (4-3, 37-40) were able to chip the large deficit down in the fourth and fifth frames against RHP Jerad Eickhoff (W, 9-4), who has won his last five decisions. After the first two batters reached to start the fourth, an RBI single by 3B Joe De Pinto, an RBI grounder by SS Garis Pena and an RBI base hit by CF Keenyn Walker drove in the three runs to cut it to an 11-3 lead. Kannapolis came back with another run in the fourth on an RBI double by 1B Leighton Pangilinan, making it 11-4.
The 'Dads responded in the top of the sixth inning with two tallies to stretch the lead back out. A double by Odor and a single from Williams put two men on to start the stanza. Selen then plated Odor on an RBI single, Selen's fourth RBI of the game, before Deglan bounced an RBI fielder's choice to score Williams, pushing the lead to 13-4.
Kannapolis refused to go down quietly, scoring five runs in the final two frames. With Hickory's lead chopped down to four runs and two Intimidators on with only one down in the bottom of the ninth, RHP Arlett Mavare (S, 2) took over and slammed the door with a strikeout and a game-ending ground out, closing the 13-9 win for the Crawdads.
