Recognition of Jan Barylski in her Volunteer Life

A warm hug from HBNW to say...

Thank you for your service and keeping us safe.

What a wonderful person!  Jan was so enthused about living a healthy lifestyle with her husband, Tom.  She had a life-force that you could feel in her beauty and in her hug!  On Christmas Eve, Jan's body succumbed to the disease of cancer.  Her passing leaves a heartache no one can heal.  However, her love for her community leaves a memory no one can take.

She had courage and jumped into a new program called the Hermosa Beach Neighborhood Watch.   Jan became one of our first Block Captain's in 2007 for the 600 block of Longfellow and was the seventh Block Captain to host a meeting.  We have had over 90 meetings!

She did a ride along with the HB Police, graduated from Redondo Beach CERT (Community Emergency Response Training) program, took a tour of the HB Police and Fire Departments, toured the 911 Dispatch Center, hosted National Night Out 2007 for her block and invited Santa over to visit.   She was passionate about her neighborhood and wanted to do all that she could for her neighbors for crime prevention and disaster preparedness.  She was truly inspiring.  When the time came to launch a new program called the Volunteers in Policing, she did not hesitate to be one of six resident volunteers to start the pilot program.  Many children and parents have seen her at Valley School directing traffic in the afternoons with her VIP partner, Dave Buckland.  The Community Project, A Show of Hands for Hermosa, was an opportunity for residents to put their handprints on the grey skate park walls.  A magical experience began to blossom into a colorful expression of the people.  Jan volunteered at every date that was offered to continue to fill up the wall with hands (and feet) for the City's 100th Birthday.

I was moved by her bighearted spirit and support of the HBNW program.  I will always be grateful and humbled by such residents that play an active part in creating a safer community for all.  ~ Kelly Kovac-Reedy
