Principal's Message

Dear Families,

The Halloween parade on Friday afternoon was great! I loved seeing all the families out watching our children parade in their costumes. One of our new staff members commented that the parade had such a strong, positive community feel and I hope you all felt that, too. And I was so happy that it didn't rain!

On Saturday morning, our Crocker Cougar football team had a game against Hoover Elementary School. It was great to see the boys and girls play! Coach B has created a strong, organized co-ed team. And our congratulations to them as they won the game, too! If you want to come watch a game, the schedule is posted outside the office on the bulletin board, or check with Coach B.

After the football game...the Walk-a-thon! This is a great Crocker Highlands event. It is wonderful to see all the families that come out for the walk-a-thon. The weather wasn't too bad and it certainly kept the Crocker walkers cool. I would like to thank Liz Borowiec and Kirsten Williams for being the co-chairs and making it happen. I would also like to thank the many volunteers for giving their time for this community-building fundraiser. It was fun to hang out with the students, visit with families, and get a little walking in, too!

November is here. Some upcoming events are a holiday on November 11th, Prospective Parent Tours, Conflict Manager Training, more Saturday football games, and more. We try to keep the up-to-date information on the website, so be sure to check it out!

Have a great week.

Beth Rhine

Walkathon

WE DID IT! The Walkathon was a great success thanks to all the parents, students and teachers willing to come out in inclement weather and strut their stuff. We want to extend a special thanks to the Classroom Trackers, Carrie Anderson - volunteer coordinator, Christin Cooper and Ms.Neely - T-shirts, Helene Gryfakis - Food Coordinator, Jim O'Hare - Course Coordinator and Julie and Holly Slater - SnoCone queen and princess, respectively.

Now is the time to start collecting those pledges from your sponsors and turning them in. The due date for money is Friday November 19th. Everyone should be proud of the great job we did.
Gratefully,
Kirsten Williams and Liz Borowiec, co-chairs

El Dia de los Muertos - Day of the Dead

Second grade is celebrating the Mexican tradition of "Dia de los Muertos" on Tuesday (11/2: Ms Keller and Ms Kantrowitz's groups and Wednesday 11/3: Ms Kallus' class). Everybody is welcome to visit our little altars and offerings to celebrate the memories of our deceased friends/relatives and even pets! We will be reading books about the holiday, bringing objects that remind us of our loved ones.

In Mexico, elaborate altars are made to welcome the "living dead": rather than a time of mourning, "the Day of the Dead"on Nov 1st and the 2nd is a celebration of life and death, "where the spirits of the dearly departed return to Earth for a family fiesta". Our little offerings or "ofrendas" may have a few photos of the one being honored, candles, pan de muerto (sweet bread of "the dead"), the traditional marigolds, sugar skulls and papel picado (Mexican tissue-paper decorations) a photo of a saint or Virgen de Guadalupe, etc. Thank you for contributing to such wonderful event!

Regards (Saludos),
Ana Ruiz-Vilar -Spanish Language Instructor-

Calling All Reading Heroes!

Crocker Highlands is gearing up, up and away for its greatest book fair ever on December 1, with this year's theme titled "Here's To Our Heroes - Reading Saves The Day!"

This is no meek and mild-mannered bookfair -- there will be tons of new breakout titles, an extended inventory list ready to rescue your holiday wish lists, and, to top it all off, Crocker will be hosting a school-wide contest during the month of November, in which you, the students, can save the day, and our principal, Beth Rhine, will take on a Super Dare!

Kids, get your reading on, and rack up points to see Principal Rhine dress up like Captain Underpants for a day, as she roams the halls, seeking justice, solving problems, and reading from some of her favorite books.

Do you have what it takes to get Principal Rhine in Captain Underpants' ... underpants? Then gear up, and prepare to read 5,000 books for the month of November! You will be given sheets to keep record of how many books you read at home, and your teachers will keep track of books read in the classroom. Let's work together, take the challenge, and become reading heroes!

Guest Speakers: This Thurs, Nov 4th at 6:30

Have you ever wondered what the Inclusion Program is all about? Come hear Crocker's Inclusion Teacher, Lindsey Smallwood, at the PTA meeting this Thursday at 6:30. She will talk about what is involved in the program and give us advice on how to talk to our kids.

Two speakers for the price of one: Lisa Hobbs, our fabulous librarian, will walk us through Crocker's online library capabilities. Students can use the virtual library for research projects, educational games, and more!

Please RSVP to president@crockerschool.org for babysitting. Pizza will be provided for all!

Thanks,
Wendy & Nicole
