Governor Baker's Bio
Governor Baker Governor Charlie Baker was inaugurated as the 72nd Governor of Massachusetts on January 8th, 2015. Since taking office, he has been making Massachusetts a great place to live, work and raise a family while delivering a customer-service oriented state government that is as hard working as the people of the Commonwealth.

Upon taking office, Governor Baker worked to close two budget gaps worth more than $2 billion without raising taxes, while bolstering local aid for our schools and communities, investing in a more reliable public transportation system and prioritizing funds to fight the opioid and heroin epidemic.

Governor Baker has supported robust business sectors by reforming the Commonwealth's regulatory environment, holding the line on taxes, and advancing efforts to rein in energy costs.

Ensuring Massachusetts continues to be a national leader in education, Governor Baker has invested over $4.6 billion in Chapter 70 education funding -- the highest level of local education aid in state history.

Confronted with a devastating opioid and heroin epidemic, Governor Baker's administration has implemented a plan focused on prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery support, including partnering with the legislature on passage of landmark legislation.

Met with a historic snowfall during his first winter in office that halted our beleaguered mass transit system, Governor Baker undertook a major overhaul to fix the MBTA by appointing a Fiscal and Management Control Board to oversee the system's operations and finances, and prioritize investments in the core system that over one million daily riders depend upon.

Prior to his election, Governor Baker was a highly successful leader of complex business and government organizations, serving as a cabinet secretary to both Governor William Weld and Paul Cellucci, and leading Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, as CEO, from the brink of bankruptcy to one of the nation's highest ranked health care providers.

Raised in Needham, Governor Baker and his wife Lauren reside in Swampscott, and are the proud parents of their three children, Charlie, AJ, and Caroline.

Hitchcock Academy: Friends and Family Fridays are Just Ducky!
Just Ducky at Hitchcock
It was a great night for Ducks at Hitchcock Academy in Brimfield on February 3rd. Like ducks to water, Friends and Families came together to use watercolors to paint a pallet of fun.

The second of a 1st Friday of the month Friends and Family Fridays at Hitchcock Academy was great fun for folks who said they knew very little about ducks and painting but the paintings were great.  Two young students have submitted their paintings to the State of MA for a review by the judges and both have hopes of placing in their age groups.  Any artwork chosen will travel around the state in exhibits as a part the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife annual Duck Stamp Drawing Contest for K-12. Those who did not submit their art, still had a wonderful time.

Hailee Rojas says, "I really liked painting the ducks and I learned about a lot of different ducks. The one I painted, I never knew about was a bufflehead." Hailee's male and female buffleheads have been entered into the student stamp competition for the state.

Christine reflecting on the evening with her daughter said, "I thought it was very relaxing. It was great mommy / daughter time. My daughter loves this stuff and it gave us a reason to get out together. "

Thank you to Country Bank for Savings, Stop & Shop and Athens Pizza for sponsoring our second Friends and Family Friday (F&FF) on February 3.

The next F&FF will be a drumming circle with Tim Kane on March 3rd. It is open to folks of all ages. Visit www.hitchcockacademy.org for more information and to register or call 413-245-9977.

Bald Eagles Love The Last Green Valley
Eagles Group
2017 Volunteer Eagle Survey Team Members.  Photo credit: W. Brennan.

Forty-three intrepid volunteers braved the cold morning air on January 14 to look for bald eagles in The Last Green Valley during the annual Midwinter Eagle Survey. The Last Green Valley, Inc. (TLGV) has organized volunteer teams since 2010, and this year, volunteers scouted 29 different locations including 22 locations on the Quinebaug, Shetucket, Willimantic and Natchaug Rivers and 7 locations on lakes and ponds.

Volunteers sighted 12 bald eagles, with 6 sighted on rivers and 6 on lakes. Most of the eagles arrived in the region during the past month or two from northern states where the cold weather has frozen over rivers and lakes.  Bald eagles are primarily fish eaters, though they have been reported to eat ducks and other prey as well as carrion. They are here because the habitat can support them with excellent food sources, and because most of our rivers don't freeze completely during the winter months.

This year's count was lower than previous years and was most likely due to the warmer weather at the time of the count and open water on lakes and ponds that dispersed the eagles throughout the region. The warmer weather in northern New England may also have kept the eagles in their home range longer than in previous years.

Some of the eagles that were sighted are "native." The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor is home to an ever-increasing population of year-round resident bald eagles. We know of 6 successful bald eagle nesting pairs that have raised and fledged eaglets in the Corridor over the last several years.

The CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will crunch all of the information gathered by volunteers to determine the number of individual birds in the area. The detailed data reported by volunteers, such as exact time, location, and movement patterns are all vital pieces of the puzzle.

Brian Hess, CT DEEP Wildlife Biologist and Midwinter Eagle Survey Coordinator, noted, "We see quite a bit of interest and participation in this year's survey with hundreds of volunteers across the state. Initial responses indicate that the counts are down a bit this year from highs in 2013 and 2014, likely due to warmer weather in December and early January. I'm extremely grateful to TLGV and Bill Reid for all of their help covering big swaths of water in Eastern Connecticut. We couldn't do this without them, or the help of the hundreds of volunteers statewide."

Nationally, the program is a project of the U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources Division. Teams across the country observe on the same date and during the same hours to make the Midwinter Eagle Survey a national, state and regional snapshot of the health of the eagle population. Some states, such as Massachusetts, do not participate in the Midwinter Eagle Survey but conduct their own nest surveys in the spring.

10 Ways to Live a Flourishing Life
Tips from Rita Schiano

1. It starts with self-reflection . . . It's been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. What does your self-portrait say about you?

2. Happiness is as much about what you don't want as what you do want. What's on your "I Don't Want . . ." List?

3. Once you free yourself of the illusion of who you want to be, the truth of who you are is crystal clear.

4. There is joy to be found in most any moment. You simply need to be willing to expand your vision and see it.

5. Insight fuels foresight. Open your mind to all the possibilities.

6. To learn something new today, reflect on what you did and what you thought about yesterday.

7. Direct Your Thinking . . . Set a goal today that is realistic. Focus your attention on the actions necessary to attain that goal.

8. Direct Your Thinking . . . Negative thoughts can be changed. Positive thoughts can be maintained.

9. Wake up every morning and begin each day with the desire and the decision to live joyfully.

10. And remember . . . While another's belief in you may sustain you for a while, lasting strength comes only when you choose to believe in yourself.

Midwinter Mischief (One Weekend Left!)

Mischief
Saturday, February 18 to Sunday, February 19

This February, Old Sturbridge Village is introducing an interactive and intimate way of experiencing the Village. Midwinter Mischief combines theatrical storytelling, historical interpretation and period dining to offer guests a daytime winter adventure...

Imagine the tale of a Yankee peddler passing through the village who decides to settle down at the Bullard Tavern on a cold winter's night. There the peddler spends every dollar he has earned on food and drink, racking up a tab far beyond his means. After being confronted over his debt, the peddler fills up his cup with ashes from the hearth and promises the tavern owner that he will return with a cup overflowing of gold. From the Bullard Tavern, costumed storytellers, artisans and villagers will entice tavern guests to wander deep into the village where they will find evidence of the peddler's adventures and schemes.

Admission to a Midwinter Mischief includes the one-hour and 45-minute outdoor/indoor experience and a period-inspired lunch in the Village's Bullard Tavern where guests can enjoy live music, demonstrations, and a cash bar featuring hot beverages and 1830s-inspired libations. Each day, the first experience departs the Bullard Tavern at 9:30 am and the last at 3:00 pm, with experiences beginning every 15 minutes. The Bullard Tap Room opens at 9:00 am where guests can purchase hot and cold beverages and breakfast pastries. At 11:00 am the Bullard Great Room opens for the inclusive 19th-century inspired lunch and a cash bar.

Synopsis:
Tood, Weetsie, and Sybill are brides in rural Louisiana in 1943. Each married a Cliffert brother. The men are off to war and a local news story about these young wives keeping the home fires burning intrigues Henry Luce. He decides that they belong on the cover Life Magazine and assigns Kate Miller to the story. She has been covering the war in Europe and, though she views doing a "women's piece" as a career set back, she accepts because it will be her first cover story. Kate spends a week with the Cliffert women and her haughty urban attitude gives way to sympathy as she begins to understand them while coming face to face with her own powerlessness in a man's world. Filled with charm and fun, The Cover of Life is a deeply affecting story about the struggle for self worth.

Optical Heritage Museum, 12 Crane Street, Southbridge, MA.

Who is invited: All historical societies, librarians, or other like-minded organizations and individuals that focus and enjoy preserving and passing on our history.

Topic: Take a journey through time, discovering the fascinating origins of not just the optical industry, but the history behind the many simple household items we take for granted today. "FOCUS" on thousands of items on display including microscopes, Lensometers, multifocal and antique spectacles. Enjoy incredible moments in history and "SEE" how our lives would be very different without these scientific discoveries. Host Dick Whitney is a passionate wealth of knowledge that he can't wait to share with all of us! This tour was a smash hit during the most recent Walktober!

Enjoy a presentation and tour by Dick Whitney of the many OHM Galleries, filled with antique spectacles, equipment, the AO collection, history of Southbridge and more. Rich history exists in our National Heritage Corridor. Stories beg to be passed on, and our skills & talents shared!

Schedule:
1:00-1:15 p.m. Arrive & Mingle
1:15-1:30 p.m. Brief Introductions - tell us who you are & where you are from
1:30-2:45 p.m. Presentation & Tour
2:45-3:00 p.m. Q&A, Refreshments, Wrap-up

THE GOAL?
To offer a quarterly event, featuring an exciting & informative historical topic each session,
presented by each of you! Show off your specialty. Instead of working alone & duplicating efforts, let's pitch in to work & learn together!

After all, HISTORY is OUR STORY. Together we care for it, enjoy it and pass it on.
Join the collaboration to conserve our history in the National Heritage Corridor.
