The National Park Service will turn 102 years young on Saturday, August 25.
On this day in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed what is now called the Organic Act establishing the National Park Service. As part of the Department of Interior, the National Park Service is responsible for protecting 400+ areas in each of the 50 states, U.S. territories and the District of Columbia, totaling 84 million acres.
National Park Service Founders Day recognizes the superior conservation and preservation efforts of the National Parks System. Whether enjoying scenic trails, open spaces, watersheds or recreational areas, the National Parks Service provides natural outdoor resources accessible to every American.
