Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Greetings!

Please stand by... The August edition of your favorite national park e-newsletter will be delayed this month, in anticipation of a big announcement about our new website (fingers crossed). Look for our complete August Cub Report to land in your inbox next week.

In the meantime, enjoy this park-related update:
Happy Birthday, National Park Service!
The National Park Service will turn 102 years young on Saturday, August 25. On this day in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed what is now called the Organic Act establishing the National Park Service. As part of the Department of Interior, the National Park Service is responsible for protecting 400+ areas in each of the 50 states, U.S. territories and the District of Columbia, totaling 84 million acres.

National Park Service Founders Day recognizes the superior conservation and preservation efforts of the National Parks System. Whether enjoying scenic trails, open spaces, watersheds or recreational areas, the National Parks Service provides natural outdoor resources accessible to every American.
All the cool kids will be wearing Members Weekend t-shirts
We've nearly reached capacity for this year's Members Weekend at Fontana Village Resort and Marina. Thank you to all who have registered.

Now, it's time to order your custom Community in the Wilderness t-shirt. We'll all be wearing this beautiful image on either a sky-blue background or sunshine yellow (your choice) during Sunday morning's closing ceremony and family photo.

"Closing ceremony," you ask? That's right. For several years weekend participants have requested an official session to wrap up the weekend, and this year we're making it happen. What better way to remember the fellowship, friendships and fun than with a group photo available before you load your suitcase back in the car.

Weekend participants should opt to pick up your shirt at the event registration (to save $5 shipping).

If you cannot attend but want to support us in spirit, shirts are $20 each + $5 shipping. All purchases support Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
National Park expert details
the Hazel Creek community
Much of our Members Weekend has been inspired by Daniel Pierce's book Hazel Creek: The Life and Death of an Iconic Mountain Community , in which we learn about the time when a famous writer mysteriously arrived and settled into a remote log cabin along Hazel Creek. Also, when a cooper mine opened and showed great promise until it soured. Following that, one of the biggest lumber companies in the country set up shop and brought opportunity and prosperity for all. TVA decided to build a dam to help America win World War II, and a once bustling town found itself inconveniently within the boundaries of our nation’s most popular national park. In all, Hazel Creek is 120 pages and is illustrated with historic photos.
