CURATED PROGRAMS

Every year DOXA invites writers, programmers, cultural theorists, film critics and filmmakers to curate a film program and write an essay for the festival guide. The essays have offered contextualization of the films, addressed broader issues, and offered insightful and wonderfully written pieces of cultural analysis and film criticism.

This year, we are proud to have Rebecca Carroll and Zeina Zahreddine curating spectacular programs for DOXA 2016!  Whether it is growing up black in America ( Black Life Is, Ain't and Still Rises ) or living through a revolution ( Arab Spring / Arab Fall ) our curated programs are fueled by a desire for change.

CURATED BY REBECCA CARROLL

This selection of films examines ideas, perceptions, and construction of race. From the career of literary giant Maya Angelou to activist/artist Marlon Riggs's final film to Ava DuVernay's affectionate portrait of L.A. hip hop, guest curator Rebecca Carroll's choice of films and extraordinary essay convey a deeply personal approach to narratives of black identity.

CURATED BY ZEINA ZAHREDDINE

A burgeoning new Arab cinema - bold, inventive, political and unafraid - is emerging out of Syria, Palestine, and Egypt. Guest curator Zeina Zahreddine's selection of films and poignant essay illustrates the unwavering resilience of people determined to maintain their integrity, creativity and humanity in the face of tremendous upheaval and revolt.
