District Kicks-Off New Recycling/Waste Reduction Initiative at High School/Middle School Campus
Monday, January 22nd was the official launch date of the new recycling and waste reduction initiative at the Dobbs Ferry High School/Middle School campus. This is an outgrowth of our Springhurst recycling efforts and the goal is to move toward zero waste tolerance and a reduction of our carbon footprint. We will now be sorting food waste in addition to recycling paper, bottles and cans. Our schools need to be a place where this life-long expectation is cultivated and reinforced. Check out the Recycling Center on the DFSD website for some simple suggestions that you can do at home to reduce our carbon footprint.
The District is working closely with the Sustainability Project Team from Greenburgh Nature Center to help train our teachers, staff, students, custodians, food service workers and cleaning service to educate them on what it takes to " Reduce, Reuse and Recycle." Watch this fun and informative " trash talk " video to hear what Dobbs students are saying about garbage.
District Looks to Recruit Diverse Faculty
DFSD recently hosted a half-day workshop for the Rivertowns school districts, presented by NEMNET Founder & CEO Warren Reid, focusing on the challenges, best practices and strategies associated with diversity faculty recruitment. Superintendents, Principals and other personnel directly involved in hiring staff attended the presentation and talked about expanding their minority recruitment efforts. The participants learned how and where to access information and resources that will assist them in meeting their diversity goals, and left with concrete strategies for success. Check out the NEMNET website for more information.

MS Bridges Falling Down
The Ashford Avenue bridge engineers could have called upon Dobbs Ferry 8th graders, who are now experts in designing truss bridges. Working in pairs, the students glued together between 90 and 120 popsicle sticks to construct their bridges in teacher J.P. Kaminski's design class. The strongest bridge supported 190 pounds of stress!

Using the computer program AutoCAD Drawing, students chose from nine basic designs, adding their own modifications to the template. Each team had an allotted budget of $2,000...virtual money of course. The bridges needed to be functional, as well as aesthetically pleasing. The end product also had to match the paper rendering exactly. Taking each bridge for a test drive to calculate its efficiency rating determined the final grade and who won the free pizza. This is one of the students' favorite STEM projects! Click to read full Enterprise story!
Book "Out of My Mind" Helps 5th Graders Build Bridges
Springhurst 5th graders recently read the book "Out of My Mind" by Sharon Draper about a girl with cerebral palsy. Like the character in the book, Westchester resident and guest speaker Miles Forma is also not able to speak or walk. Miles has cerebral palsy and communicates via his Dynavox augmentative communication device.
Miles gave a half-hour presentation for the students recapping his journey from childhood to present. Afterwards, he went into each 5th grade classroom for a Q&A with students and to demonstrate how he is able to "talk" using adaptive technology. An inspirational book and young man!
