As I mentioned in our State of the Department talk last November, we are committed to creating and fostering a culture of equality and inclusion and these values are fundamental to our future. While my comments below focus on gender equity, under the leadership of
Sonia Flores
we are also making a great deal of progress in diversity and unconscious bias training.
Gender equity in medicine has come a long way over the past several decades, however we continue to face a number of challenges. A newly published study from global management consulting and professional services firm Accenture,
When She Rises We All Rise: Getting to Equal 2018: Creating a culture where everyone thrives
, notes that organizations that support transparency, parental leave, and women's networks are key to progress. I want to reinforce that our Department is actively working to this end, and I’m pleased with the progress we’ve made on several fronts especially around gender equity.
- Last year the Department of Medicine launched the Program to Advance Gender Equity (PAGE) under the leadership of Maggie Wierman and published findings from the Strategic Initiative on Gender Equity report: Supporting Gender Equity: Faculty Focus Group Results. Top ranking areas for action include: hiring policies, mentorship, professional development, institutional resources, unconscious bias, flexible work options, and salary transparency. Although a recent Doximity 2018 Physician Compensation Report shows the physician gender wage gap widening, as a result of a 6-year effort we have substantially reduced the gender gap between men and women in our Department. Specifically, we've improved salary equity and substantially improved the percentage of faculty that exceed the AAMC year-in-rank benchmarks over the last 6 years (see figure). Currently, across all ranks, 85.1% of women and 85.3% of men are at or above the AAMC benchmark for their year-in-rank. Moreover, the Department has asked each Division Head to share AAMC salary benchmarks as part of each annual review, and has posted Divisional Incentive plans on our website. Our goal is to achieve parity through open and transparent discussions between faculty and their division heads.
- In January, I was pleased to announce that the DOM received approval from our Dean and Chancellor to provide two weeks of paid parental leave to DOM faculty and staff on the AMC campus following the birth of an employee’s child or the placement of a child with an employee in connection with adoption or permanent foster care. Please join me in thanking Sonia Flores for leading this effort, and our Division Heads and staff for their unwavering support for this program. If you have questions about the plan, please get in touch with your division head, Sonia Flores, or Corena Carmichael.
- I’m also pleased that two women have taken on leadership roles in our department, Marisha Burden, Division head of Hospital Medicine and Kathleen Barnes as the first head of our new Division of Biomedical Informatics and Personalized Medicine. Their contributions are already helping to shape the growth of our department and their leadership further deepens the breadth and depth of our diverse faculty.
While important progress has been made and additional initiatives are launching in the Department, we still have much work to do and I want to encourage all of you to get involved.
The Department is working toward culture change goals with the recent launch of the Wellness Initiative led by
Marc Moss
which addresses physician resilience and burnout. With the goal of fostering a safe working environment,
Sonia Flores
is in the process of developing a committee (workplace aggression committee) to provide a safe and supportive environment for career development. Please contact Sonia Flores for more information on how you can participate in the workplace aggression committee. May was National Mental Health Awareness month and a reminder that a commitment to these important initiatives will help us accomplish more in a safe, healthy environment.
The next several years will be a time of growth and innovation. By managing that growth strategically and equitably, and making sure that everyone is supported to develop their careers, I believe we can emerge as a one of very best Departments of Medicine in the country.
Best regards,
David A. Schwartz, MD
Robert W. Schrier Professor and Chair of Medicine
