In this newsletter: faculty recognition, junior faculty survival skills, funding programs and more.
Friends and Colleagues,
Your dedication and achievements are crucial to our success, and to our continued progress toward our vision of emerging as one of the best departments of medicine nationally by 2020. To recognize your contributions, our department is launching two new initiatives, which I hope you’ll take the time to learn about:

First, with leadership by Ethan Cumbler, MD and David Tanaka, MD, we are creating an Expert Council for Clinical Excellence and Leadership (EXCCEL). EXCCEL members will be clinicians who demonstrate the highest standards of bedside manner, professionalism, ethics, integrity, empathy, collaboration, and communication; these faculty members will also be a resource to model and promote the culture of exceptional clinical care in our department. EXCCEL nominations are by peers, and are due March 1 – please view the program website for more information and eligibility.

Second, we are planning an event in June to celebrate the accomplishments of our department and recognize some of the truly outstanding achievements of our faculty. Peter Agre, MD, recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery of the aquaporin water channels, will be our keynote speaker. We are soliciting nominations of DOM faculty who have had exceptional accomplishments in the past three years. Nominations are requested for regular and volunteer faculty members from the SOM and our affiliates, at all ranks, inclusive of MD/DO, PhD, and advanced practice providers. Please view the short nomination form here – the deadline to nominate faculty is March 10.

Finally, please take a moment to complete the 5280 2017 Top Doctors ballot, and look for an email soon from Doximity.com inviting you to participate in the 2017 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” physician survey – while imperfect, these types of rankings help ensure that CU and UCH receive the recognition we’ve earned with the exemplary care you provide to your patients.

I look forward to reviewing your nominations, and to recognizing some of the many members of our department who are making outstanding contributions to our mission and to our community.

Spotlight: Patient Care
"I'm walking faster with more pep in my step," says Zimmerman, 66, one of about 50 participants in a study of HIV-infected patients run by Kristine Erlandson, MD (Infectious Diseases; Geriatrics). Erlandson specializes in treating frail and older HIV-infected patients, and conducts research studies on patients who have lived decades with HIV.
Spotlight: Research
The Department of Medicine has selected 2 new recipients of its Health Services Research Development Grant program, which supports early-career investigators who want to develop expertise in health services research.
Spotlight: Education
"We noticed that patients often received well-intended medical care that was probably unnecessary, but there wasn’t a place in our training curriculum to help identify and limit such occurrences,” says Brandon Combs (GIM), who cofounded the Do No Harm project, inviting med students/residents to write a short narrative describing an experience in which medical overuse resulted in — or posed the threat of — harm to a patient.
