In this newsletter: State of the Department, Annual Report, funding opportunities and more.
Friends and Colleagues,
Tomorrow, I will give our fifth annual State of the Department presentation, discussing highlights from the past year in the Department of Medicine, new initiatives, progress towards strategic goals, and progress towards the Department's overall mission to become one of the very best Departments of Medicine in the country by 2020. This year, the presentation has also been shaped by the thoughtful and perceptive questions we received from you in the survey conducted last month – thanks to everyone who participated in this process. Please click here for details or to add the event to your calendar.

I’m also pleased to share with you our first-ever Department of Medicine Annual Report (PDF). This report is intended as a complement to the State of the Department talk, and as a communications tool we can use throughout the year in our efforts to recruit faculty and trainees. It provides an overview of the actions we’ve taken to advance our three key missions of exemplary patient care, world-class research, and education of the next generation of leaders in health care, and also highlights the programs we’ve launched to support diversity, gender equity and faculty advancement in our department. I look forward to hearing your comments and suggestions on the report.

Thank you for all you do for our department – please plan to join me Thursday afternoon in Hensel Phelps so I can share with you the progress we’ve made and the steps we will take to build on your accomplishments.

Spotlight: Patient Care
Colleen McIlvennan, DNP, MS (Division of Cardiology) received a national Magnet Nurse of the Year award for her work in patient decision-making related to implanted cardiac devices. "We have a culture of curiosity here. We’ve created processes that encourage nurses and providers to find the evidence that will help to improve patient care."
.
Spotlight: Research
Newly published data from the Long-Term Oxygen Treatment Trial (LOTT) show that oxygen use is not beneficial for most people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and moderately low levels of blood oxygen. The LOTT study was a seven-year study including patients from 42 U.S. medical centers, including Denver Health, which began in 2009 and was completed in 2015.
Spotlight: Community
The CU School of Medicine recently received a $266K grant to develop and implement an Advance Care Planning (ACP) Volunteer Training and Certificate Program which seeks to increase the number of Coloradans actively engaged in their health. "This project will have significant impact by giving voice to and empowering people to express their personal health care preferences," said Jean Kutner, MD, MSPH (Division of General Internal Medicine).

DOM Resources:  Clinician-Educator  Fellow Development Program
The purpose of the Clinician-Educator Fellow Development Program is to create opportunities for development of clinician educators and provide divisions with the flexibility to meet the educational needs of a wider range of fellows during a one year subspecialty fellowship experience. Participating divisions may on a case by case basis offer this program as part of a path to a faculty position. Pathways to this program include:
  • Initial applications to fellowship with clinician-educator (CE) pathways (examples: renal, endocrine)
  • Application for extra year after one year fellowship program (examples: GIM, palliative care, geriatrics)
  • Transfer from T32s as interests evolve and become more focused on CE careers.
At least two (competitive) fellowship slots will be offered during fiscal year 2017-18. Optional participation with additional divisional support beyond the UCH/DOM/division funded positions may be considered in subsequent years. Full information and RFA available online; application deadline is January 16, 2017.
