DANA POINT HARBOR UPDATES

Temporary Closure Embarcadero Main Entrance
Earlier this past week South Coast Water District workmen arrived to quickly start an emergency dig at the main entrance to the Embarcadero, in search of a main sewer line leak at what is known as the Force Main at Lift Station 11. As of Thursday afternoon, the hole was some 30 feet long, 20 feet wide and over 12 1/2 feet deep. When the leak was finally located on Friday to turned out to be over 16 feet below ground level. Hence the main Embarcadero entrance is closed temporarily along with the far-right lane of Dana Harbor Drive at this location.
We received an email update from SCWD Chief Operating Officer Joe McDivitt Sunday morning with the good news that that a partial repair was completed on Saturday. The final repairs should be done by Monday with wrap up and reopening the street by end of the day Tuesday, February 14th. In the interim, boaters should enter on Golden Lantern at what is normally the Embarcadero boater parking lot exit. While we're seen no signage, there may be Embarcadero staff present during peak periods to provide directions.

Harbor Manager Recruiting Status Update
During a harbor meeting on Thursday, February 9th, Bill Reiter, OC Parks Division Manager advised that there have been over 70 applications received from applicants nationwide for the new permanent employment position of Dana Point Harbor Manager which was announced back in December. We of course inquired concerning the applicants' harbor management qualifications (versus landside property management experience which is also desired) and Bill advised that there are many candidates claiming these credentials. We take this as good news as we believe a strong harbor and marina management background is fundamental to successful performance in the role.
Next steps beyond initial applicant screenings are an Application Appraisal Panel whose will refer / not refer a list of candidates to a Qualifications Appraisal Panel who will perform structured interviews to establish the final section list. According to Bill, anticipated completion of a these two stages in the selection process could be forthcoming in the "late March" timeframe.

New Harbor Marketing Contract
The small contract let earlier this fall with The Ace Agency of Santa Ana has been significantly expanded with an initial revised budget of 300k. The new engagement will run to run thru mid-year 2018, and beyond if extended. Scope now includes promotion of harbor events on the water as well as on land. Scope also includes social media as well as updating multiple harbor websites to expand / better coordinate information and marketing messaging. This engagement follows previous work done for OC Parks which is featured as a case study on The Ace Agency website. (Click here)
