NPC submit Water Security situation to Parliament

Water This past week the National Planning Commission (NPC) submitted to the Water and  Sanitation Portfolio Committee in Parliament on South Africa's Water Security situation. South Africa's water security situation is at significant risk. Please click on SA Water Security to peruse submission.

What does Brexit mean for South Africa?

This week, Agbiz, Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), Tutwa Consulting Group, and with support of the Rand Merchant Bank held a workshop under the theme, "What does Brexit mean for South Africa". Amongst representatives that attended the workshop was the British High Commission representatives, IDC, SACU, the dti, FNB and Standard Bank.

The presentations explored Brexit's implications on South Africa and global economies, UK-SA trade relations and SA-UK agricultural trade. South Africa has significant economic relations with the UK and the rest of EU and that was clearly outlined in the presentations. Therefore, it is important to start outlining a path for engagement for South African businesses, so that they can maintain and even increase their market share and participation in the UK and the EU at large. This workshop was a start of many sessions to come and Agbiz will be fully involved throughout these developments.

South African agricultural sector remains in recession

The second quarter of 2016 real GDP figures released by Statistics South Africa showed that overall economic growth was well above market expectations of 2.6% quarter-on-quarter (q/q). The economy grew by a seasonally adjusted annualised rate of 3.3% q/q, following contraction of 1.2% q/q in the first quarter of the year. Wandile Sihlobo, Head of Agribusiness Intelligence at Agbiz, exchanges his views in the linked article»

Agbiz is making available an annual bursary to a South African student registered for a Masters or PhD degree in either agricultural economics or agribusiness management related fields. The application deadline is 9 December 2016.  More information»

BVG has launched a new company called WeatherInDe to market and sell weather derivatives. The growing need for customised weather derivatives has revolutionised the weather derivative market worldwide. Customers no longer have to adapt to standardised contracts traded on the exchanges, but can instead customise the contracts to suit their needs and risk appetite.   Read more»
