Greetings DVIA Families!

A Few Words From Our Principal

Hello Everyone!

I hope you are enjoying the holiday weekend.

I wanted to comment briefly about the message I sent out on Friday about lice.

Please make sure to follow the directions in that letter to determine whether your child has lice and to eliminate lice from your home.  In the past we have only had one episode of lice at DVIA and we were able to contain it immediately because our families and staff were diligent about finding and eliminating the pesky critters.  Please know that our staff will be taking necessary steps on campus by bagging up all pillows and cushions and storing them away from campus for three weeks.

If you haven't read the lice message sent Friday, please do!  If you didn't receive it, please check your junk and spam mail boxes and make sure the DVIA newsletters go to your inbox.
Cheers!
M_Rainey sig

Tyler's Two Cents

tyler two cents
I was recently reading about ways we can help our kids understand and develop empathy, and I came across a website with practical tips to help kids develop their sense of empathy:

First, if your child is scared, empathize with your child. Have a conversation like, "Are you feeling scared of that dog? He is a nice dog but he is barking really loudly. That can be scary. I will hold you/you can stand close to me until he walks by."

Second, talk about the feelings and perspectives of other people. "Todd is feeling sad because you took his robot. Please give Todd back his robot and then you can choose another one to play with."

Third, read stories about feelings and perspective.  Many books on your bookshelves at home contain great examples of characters showing empathy (or struggling to show empathy). Some other suggestions include:
  • My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss
  • How Are You Peeling by Saxton Freymann and Joost Elffers
  • Feelings by Aliki
  • The Feelings Book by Todd Parr
  • Baby Faces by DK Publishing
  • When I Am/Cuando Estoy by Gladys Rosa-Mendoza.
Another aspect of developing empathy is adults exercising patience. Empathy is a complex skill to learn and is sometimes easier said than done.  Persevering in this area will lead to stronger family and peer relationships and a better understanding of the world we live in.
