Greetings DVIA Families!

A Few Words From Our Principal

Hello Everyone!
A huge thank you and acknowledgement to our kiddos and families who really hung in there with the wet weather and the large puddles and small lakes that formed all over campus!  I'm continually amazed by how flexible all of you are.  Thank you!

Our Executive Director and Board of Trustees have approved DVIA's 2014-2015 calendar and here are some dates you are likely to want to know:
  • 8/18 First Day of School (on-campus for M/Th and homeschool day for T/F)
  • 8/18 and 8/19 Parent Educator Conference #1(formerly called "Jumpstart").  Parents, please plan to attend on your child's DVIA day...you are welcome to attend both days as well!
  • 9/1 Labor Day Holiday
  • 9/24 Parent Eductor Conference #2
  • 10/7 & 8 Student Led Conferences (no students on 10/7)
  • 11/10-11 Veteran's Day Holiday and PD Day (no school for students)
  • 11/12 Parent Educator Conference #3
  • 11/24-28 Thanksgiving Holiday
  • 12/22-1/2 Winter Break
  • 1/19 MLK Holiday
  • 2/13 & 16 President's Day Holiday
  • 3/10 & 11 Student Led Conferences (no students on 3/10)
  • 4/6-10 Spring Break
  • 5/25 Memorial Day Holiday
  • 6/5 Last Day of School
Please note these dates in your calendars so that we can count on your child's attendance during the crucial first days of school and so that you can attend our Parent Educator Conferences.  Thank you!
Have a great week!

Tyler's Two Cents

tyler two cents
This year California, along with 22 other states, will pilot a new Federal test that replaces the STAR (Standardized Testing And Reporting) assessment from the No Child Left Behind initiative. The only remnants from STAR are the 5th & 8th grade science test (which will be administered sometime in April) and the 5th and 7th grade Physical Fitness test.  Note that the 4th & 7th grade writing test will not occur.

These new Federal assessments will be known as the Smarter Balance Assessments. In California, these assessments will be known specifically as the CAASP (California Assessment of Student Progress and Performance). Assessments are conducted online.

Makers of the assessments say they will take anywhere from 3-4 hours to complete. Since this is a pilot year, schools and students will not receive any data related to the assessments. This year is simply "to test the test."  Many of the details are yet to be worked out, and we will update you as details are released from the state. As always, we will strive to conduct these tests in a manner that least impacts the classroom. More information is available here.
