Q&A with Nahum Avila of SUN CITY CRAFT BEER FEST!

Only about 300 breweries survived the U.S. Prohibition after 1933, and by 1982 only 50 breweries remained active in America. In the vacuum of beer emerged a homebrewing renaissance that has taken root since and grown into the craft beer culture we know today. Now there are over 2,000 independent craft brewers in the United States and growing.

Celebrating this blossoming craft beer culture, Nahum Avila has created the Sun City Craft Beer Fest (SCCBF) - taking place for the second year in a row on downtown El Paso streets, Saturday, October 4, 2014 . We had a moment to ask the event organizer a few questions about the festival and his personal tastes.

Q. So far, we know that this year Sun City Craft Beer Fest has a larger downtown footprint with a huge canopy for more shade, more live music and better perks. Surely the response from the first festival last year contributed to coming back, what kind of feedback did you receive?

Mexican Baseball Fiesta!

The El Paso Chihuahuas, in conjunction with Leg Up Entertainment and GECU, present the first-ever Mexican Baseball Fiesta. The Fiesta features two teams from Mexico, Los Naranjeros de Hermosillo and Los Tomateros de Culiacn, members of the Pacific League of Mexico.

The GECU Mexican Baseball Fiesta is a fun atmosphere similar to the league's regular season games with music, food, and entertainment. The Mexican Baseball Fiesta debuted as a four team tournament in 2011 in Tucson, Ariz., an event that also featured Hermosillo.

Building from the success of the previous three years, the Mexican Baseball Fiesta has grown throughout Arizona, Northern Mexico, and Texas. This year's action will include exhibition games in six cities and run through October, prior to the start of the season.

The Pacific League of Mexico was founded in 1945 and plays from October through February. The champion of the league, also referred to as the Winter League of Mexico, plays in the Caribbean World Series, a title taken home by the Naranjeros in February of this year.

Los Naranjeros are based in the Capital of Sonora. Los Naranjeros de Hermosillo are one of the most successful teams in the Mexican Pacific League, having won 16 league titles and are the recent winners of the Caribbean Series title, their second in league history. In 1976, they became the first Mexican team to win the Caribbean Series. Former Hermosillo players include Curt Schilling, Larry Walker, Fernando Valenzuela, Erubiel Durazo and Vinny Castilla.

Los Tomateros are one of the most popular teams in the Mexican Pacific League. They have won nine Mexican Pacific League Championships, most recently in 2004. In that same year they went on to win the Caribbean Series with a lineup that featured several Major League players including Ramiro Pena, current second baseman for the Atlanta Braves. Other players include Rodrigo Lopez, Oliver Perez, Luis Ayala, Jose Silva and Benji Gil.

TrapFest Block Party!

Trap is a music genre that originateed in the early 2000's from Southern hip hop in the United States. It is typified by its aggressive lyrical content and sound, which incorporates 808 (deep low-loud bass) drums, double-time, triple-time and other faster division of hi-hats, pitch-down vocals, layered synthesizers, and cinematic strings.

In 2012, a new movement of electronic music producers and DJs emerged who began incorporating elements of trap music into their works. This helped expand its popularity among electronic music fans. A number of stylistic offshoots of trap developed, which in the latter half of 2012 gained a rise in viral popularity and made a noticeable impact on dance music.

TrapFest is the America's Premier Trap and Bass Music Tour and this year in their second edition in downtown El Paso the festival's line up includes: Loudpvck (pronounced 'loud pack'), DJ Sliink, Green Lantern (associated and praised by Jay-Z, Eminem, and NAS), Lookas, Vinnie, Riot Ten, and many more prominent Trap performers.

9th Annual Friends of FEMAP International Gala!

For 40 years, FEMAP has responded to the healthcare challenges of the community. In 1973, the goal of Guadalupe Arizpe de De la Vega was to make family planning and prenatal care accessible to women living in poverty.

Inspired by a vision to provide access to good medical care education for future and expectant mothers in Ciudad Jurez, Guadalupe Arizpe de De la Vega built a two-room clinic named Clinica de la Familia which became Hospital de la Familia in 1976. By the late '70s the nongovernmental nonprofit FEMAP (Federacion Mexicana Asociaciones Privadas de Salud y Desarrollo Comunitario A.C.) was born.

Over the years, FEMAP has grown to two full-service inpatient hospitals; a nursing school; and has implemented community based programs in the areas of health, the advancement of children and adolescent's emotional and physical development and economic growth through the micro-finance program.

Today, nurtured by an army of volunteer health promoters, FEMAP's community programs are far-reaching and our mission has grown to encompass improving the overall quality of life of the individual, the family and society through education, research and service in our bi-national community.

The annual FEMAP Gala (A Paso Del Norte Foundation Challenge Fund Event) raises money for the programs and services in Cd. Juarez. The gala is a truly bi-national event attended by both Mexican Nationals and Americans not only from El Paso and its sister city in Cd. Juarez, but from Houston, Santa Fe, New York and Monterrey, Mexico City and Chihuahua.

Tricky Falls presents Fit for a King!

There is a common phrase among sportscasters that certain athletes "play the game the right way" - their fundamentals are so sound, their skill set so honed that they could be considered a case study in the most proper way to approach the sport they represent.

Tyler, Texas based newcomers Fit For A King just might represent how that metaphor applies to a band. By forging ahead on their own path, making music well beyond their years and making it from the heart. The hotly tipped metalcore band has been elbowing its way onto the national scene as a full-time touring outfit, cultivating fans at an alarming clip with a crushingly heavy, artful take on the genre that gives subtle tips of the hat to bands as diverse as Circa Survive and Linkin Park. The band's passionate music, coupled with an explosive live show, has made Fit For a King a sensation in the independent music scene.

This rock show will be complemented similar genre bands as: Being as an Ocean, Gideon, Wolves at the Gate, and Capsize.

Hard tickets for the show can be found at Maria's Closet, Bowie Feathers, Eloise and All That Music, and online at trickyfalls.com
