March 3, 2017

Lent is a 40-day season of purposeful focus on prayer and fasting to draw us closer to God. A time to cleanse ourselves of unhealthy habits, relationships, and unforgiveness that block our blessings. A time to re-evaluate and redirect our use of time, talents, spiritual gifts, and service. A time to be more intentional.

40 Days of Power Lenten Devotional

When is Lent?
Lent is forty days before Easter, excluding Sundays. Sundays are excluded because every Sunday is like a little Easter and 40 days is like a tithe of one's time, or one-tenth of a year. Lent always begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. Lent this year is March 1 - April 15, 2017.

Why Should I Participate in Lent?
Are you satisfied with every aspect of your Christian life? Are you living a fulfilled life of purpose, passion, and direction? Are you satisfied with your relationships at work, at home, among friends, and family? Are you using your gifts and talents to build up the body of Christ? Are you sensing that God wants you to do more or something different? God has a plan for your life. Are you on God's plan? Do you fill the emptiness inside with mindless activities, TV, excessive eating, drinking, and unhealthy relationships? Our lives are filled with distractions and frustrations that take our focus away from God.

40 Days of Power: March 1 - April 16, 2017

Church-wide Bible Study
Are you ALL IN?
If Jesus is not Lord of ALL then Jesus is not Lord at ALL.
It's all or nothing. It's now or never.

Join us every Tuesday night for Church-Wide Bible Study in the Sanctuary beginning March 7, 2017. Prayer Service begins at 6:30 PM, Praise and Worship at 7:00 PM Bible Study at 7:30 PM.

Register and pre-order your book ALL IN by Mark Batterson by stopping by the church office or contacting Rev. Adriane Wise at awise@metropolitanbaptist.orgBooks are $12.00 and cash & checks are accepted  (checks made out to Metropolitan Baptist Church).

Batterson writes, "For many years, I thought I was following Jesus.  I wasn't.  I had invited Jesus to follow me.  I call it inverted Christianity.  And it's a subtle form of selfishness that masquerades as spirituality.  That's when I sold out and bought in.  When did we start believing that the gospel is an insurance plan?  It's a daring plan.  Jesus did not die just to keep us safe. He died to make us dangerous."

Social Justice Ministry Update

Education
House Bill 610 makes some large changes. Inform yourselves. This bill will effectively starts the school voucher system to be used by children ages 5-17. In addition the bill will eliminate the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (EESA) of 1965, which is the nation's educational law and provides equal opportunity in education. ESSA is a big comprehensive program that covers programs for struggling learners, AP classes, ESL classes, classes for minorities such as Native Americans, Rural Education, Education for the Homeless, School Safety (Gun-Free schools), Monitoring and Compliance and Federal Accountability Programs. The Bill also abolishes the Nutritional Act of 2012 (No Hungry Kids Act) which provides nutritional standards in school breakfast and lunch.

International Women's Day
On March 8, 2017 women are asked to join in a day of economic solidarity by participating in A Day Without A Woman. Because not every woman is able to take the day off , there are other ways you can participate. For example, women are asked not to shop on that day, except for minority owned business as another way to participate. Additionally, women are asked to wear red to show solidarity.

It's Time for Sunday School

The Source of All Love

"What the world needs now is love sweet love; it's the only thing that there is just too little of.  What the world needs now, is love sweet love. No, not just for some but for everyone.  Lord, we don't another mountain.  There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb.  There oceans and rivers enough cross.  Enough to last until the end of time."

This beautiful song is sung by the great Dionne Warrick.  It's a request so to speak; asking God not to give us another mountain to climb, oceans and rivers to cross but give us that which will sustain us--love.  Love is the focus of our lesson this week.  John, the hand-picked apostle of Jesus is writing from Ephesus to the churches in Asia Minor to reassure believers of their commitment to a certain moral standard and to love one another.  He reminds them that God is the very definition of love; it's the core of his nature and the motivation behind everything that he does.  Like God, love should be our standard.  God did not give us a spirit of fear but the ability to love freely, boldly and without conditions.  Fear casts doubts but love sheds light; light in the world and light in our lives.  "What the world needs now is love sweet love; it's the only thing that there is just too little of. . ."

Join us this week as we begin a series in our Sunday School lessons on love-it's source, it's strength and it's enduring power.  God's love is eternal, like the oceans, it love will last until the end of time.  By the end of this lesson we will,

1)     CONSIDER differences and similarities between God's love and human love;
2)     REFLECT on how His perfect love cast out fear in human life; and
3)     DEMONSTRATE what it means to love others the way God loves us.

Many shy away from giving themselves fully to another, but when we are persuaded of God's love for us, it casts away all fear leaving us free to love.  Why is it so difficult to give and receive love?

Bible Background: 1 John 4:7-19
Devotional Reading: Psalm 40:1-10

Sunday School will begin at the conclusion of the 7:15 a.m. service

"Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another." (1 John 4:11)
