Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday
Read
Luke 22:47-71  Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance. When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. Then a servant-girl, seeing him in the firelight, stared at him and said, 'This man also was with him.' But he denied it, saying, 'Woman, I do not know him.' A little later someone else, on seeing him, said, 'You also are one of them.' But Peter said, 'Man, I am not!' Then about an hour later yet another kept insisting, 'Surely this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean.' But Peter said, 'Man, I do not know what you are talking about!' At that moment, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed. The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, 'Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times.' And he went out and wept bitterly.

Peter's feelings just after the cock crowed are almost unimaginable. We can certainly empathize with him as he weeps bitterly at his betrayal, because we know how much Peter really loved Jesus. I wonder what Peter was thinking before he denied Jesus, as he followed behind and then as he warmed himself at the fire. How did his thoughts and actions take him so far away from Jesus? Peter loved Jesus, but Peter made mistakes. Fortunately, Jesus knew Peter's heart, just like he knows ours, and loves us despite our mistakes.

Pray
A lmighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.
