To Be Blessed and to Bless

 Numbers 6:22-27

I love reading a scripture that shows God empowering people, and I love encountering God's love and generosity toward humankind. In the Priestly Benediction found in the Numbers passage that we read today, we get both. God empowers the priests to bless others, so the people may be blessed by God. How great is that?

This scripture is a powerful reminder to me of what God wants for me, and for each and every person: grace and peace. At a time when the Israelites were wandering in exile, God tells Moses that the priests are to bless their people by asking for God's peace and graciousness for each of them, and that God will bless them. I trust that God wishes that same peace and grace for all of us today.

This scripture also reminds me of how much blessing I receive from others-friends, family, classmates, coworkers, roommates, professors, and even complete strangers. The fact that God shares the work of blessing with all of us is an awesome and wonderful gift.

I take comfort in the image of God in this benediction: warm, loving, and offering grace and peace to the people. I give thanks for all the people in my life who bless me in so many ways. And I remind myself that I can participate in this work of blessing by reaching out to others and sharing the love, grace, and peace of God.

May you be blessed by God through others, and may you be God's blessing to others.
