JESUS, HE KNOWS ME
Tuesday, September 19th

1 You have looked deep into my heart, Lord, and you know all about me. 2 You know when I am resting or when I am working, and from heaven you discover my thoughts.
3 You notice everything I do and everywhere I go. 4 Before I even speak a word, you know what I will say, 5 and with your powerful arm you protect me from every side. 6 I can't understand all of this! Such wonderful knowledge is far above me.
Psalm 139:1-5 (CEV)

When we say that we know someone, what do we really mean? Do we mean that we know them personally? Do we mean that we are familiar with them or have heard of them before? Have we spent a significant amount of time with them to get to know them? What constitutes true knowledge of something or someone to us?

If you were to talk to an inventor about their invention, he would most likely be able to tell you all about it. He could tell you how it was put together and what pieces went into its construction. He would be able to identify everything, seen and unseen, about it. His knowledge of that invention would be far more intimate than just a casual observer or bystander.

God is the same way. David wrote in Psalm 139 that God knew him and saw him. He knew everything about him. Elsewhere in the Bible, God speaks to the prophet Jeremiah and tells him that even before he had been formed in his mother's womb, he was known by God. God is our creator and he, as the inventor, knows us inside and out. He is intimately aware of what went into creating us and is familiar with our total makeup, regardless of whether or not we reveal that to anyone else or even are familiar with it all ourselves.

In some ways, that might feel scary to us. The idea of being completely and totally and intimately known by someone may scare us, but once we move past the initial shock, hopefully we will feel free. There is something freeing in the knowledge that not only do we not need to hide but that we can't hide.

God knows us intimately and he calls us to know him as well. We will never get to the same depth of knowledge with God that he has of us. We will spend eternity getting to know him more. In the meantime, if we seek after him and seek to know him deeply, he will continue to reveal himself to us,.

Going deeper:
  • What does it mean to really know someone? How do you know if you really know a person?
  • What terrifies you about being completely known by someone?
  • Do you see God's intimate knowledge of you as scary, freeing, or both? Why?

Prayer:
Father, thank you for forming me and putting me together. Thank you for your intimate knowledge of me. Help me to see the benefit of that and to pursue you as deeply as you know me. In doing so, reveal yourself to me in the process. In Jesus' name, Amen.
