I Chronicles 18:8 "Likewise from Tibhath, and from Chun, cities of Hadarezer, brought David very much brass, wherewith Solomon made the brasen sea, and the pillars, and the vessels of brass."

Your Dream Job

Back when I was fifteen and working in the dining hall at the Bill Rice Ranch, I thought my boss was giving me my dream job. He asked the group of us guys, "Who knows how to drive a stick shift?" That is a magic question to a bunch of high school guys! I had my dream job in my head before he finished his question. Whatever it involved, if it involved a stick shift, an engine, and four tires, I was in! Instantly, five or six hands shot up in the air. My boss picked the six guys with hands raised . . . and promptly gave us each a broom to start sweeping! It did not take us long to figure out that we had been hoodwinked. Sweeping was not exactly the dream job I had in mind.

Have you ever gotten a job, but it was not the job that you wanted? Well, even kings don't always get their dream jobs! King David wanted to build God a house, but God did not give him that privilege. Instead, God passed the privilege of building the temple to David's son, Solomon. So what do you do when you do not get your dream job? David's example challenges us that when you cannot do what you want to do, do what you should do.

The first part of chapter 18 is full of David's work, even though he could not build the temple. He smote, took, houghed, reserved, and brought. Those are all words of action. What came of all of this? What David brought, Solomon built. When David could not do what he wanted to do (build the temple), he did what he should have done. David's battles paved the way for Solomon's building.

You may not be doing what you want to do, but you can always do what you should. Do what you should do, regardless of who reaps the benefits. Solomon reaped the benefits of the battles David fought and the materials David gathered. Do what you should do, regardless of who gets the credit. When you think of the magnificent temple in Jerusalem, whose name do you associate with it? We know it as Solomon's Temple. Solomon's Temple was David's idea, not Solomon's!

You might be disappointed in a job you get today. It may not be your dream job, but you can learn from David's example. When you cannot do what you want to do, do what you should do, regardless of who reaps the benefits and who gets the credit.
