I Chronicles 15:13  "For because ye did it not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order."

Making the Most of Mistakes

Do you make mistakes?  Misery must love company, because you are in good company this morning!  Sometimes you can just flat out do the wrong thing; other times you can do the right thing at the wrong time; and you can even do the right thing at the right time but in the wrong way!  King David made a mistake in bringing the Ark of God in a wrong way; and in the end, his mistake cost a man his life!  David could have been devastated.  Instead, his story teaches us the solution for mistakes.

What will you make of your mistakes?  Will you make excuses, or will you learn from your mistakes?  David teaches us that a wise person will learn from his mistakes and make the most out of them!  Everyone makes mistakes, but not everyone learns from them.

I hate to break the news to you, but you will make mistakes.  You will probably make a mistake today.  When you do, remember the four-fold lesson from David in I Chronicles 15.  First, don't give up on God.  Just because you made the same mistake again doesn't mean you have to quit and give up.  Second, don't abandon your zeal for God.  We do serve a God of second chances.  Third, don't stay down.  Don't make a bigger mistake by not learning from your mistakes!  The bigger failure is failing to learn from your past failures.  Fourth, don't try to bring back what is already done.  If you made a mistake, don't dwell on what is done; make it right with God or another person if needed, then move on.

Several years ago, my family and I went to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, home of the Wright brothers' first flight.  I was moved to hear the story of how the brothers continued on with their goal of flying despite failure after failure.  Isn't it funny that we don't think of the Wright brothers as failures?  We think of them as successes because they learned from their mistakes.  That day we toured that special place in North Carolina, a commercial jetliner flew over our heads.  I wondered if anyone on that plane had a clue about the piece of ground they were flying over.  The Wright brothers' mistakes had led to a successful flight for them that day!  Being afraid of failing is not the answer; learning from your failures is the key to making the most of your mistakes.
