Dance of the Month
with Seth Williams!

Baroque Dance for Musicians
 taught by Seth Williams
with Leah Gale Nelson, violin
at the Mark Morris Dance Center

This workshop is aimed at musicians especially, presupposes no existing dance skills, and will cover the basics of the baroque dance suite: the allemande, courante, sarabande, and gigue. That said, all are welcome. We will discuss the distinctive movement qualities of each dance form, and while avoiding dogma, propose ways in which they might inform a musician's choices when playing these musical forms.

Changes From Last Year

1. It is possible to check into the dorms on June 27th for those students coming from afar or those who would like an extra day in Santa Barbara to get settled before classes begin.

2. Responding to the unanimous request from students last year, we are extending the weekend studies into Monday and Tuesday and offering more detailed attention to the dance material, how it is presented and how it is performed.

3. Sarah Edgar is joining us and will conduct classes Monday and Tuesday on the subject of incorporating historical dance resources into one's current dance practice and new creations.  The emphasis will be on creating a contemporary aesthetic inspired by the past.

4. James Richman is joining us and will be giving a practical class for dancers covering  musical structures for different dance forms and how to improve communications between dancers and musicians.

5. Musical Oratory will be offering a workshop on Baroque Music for musicians at the same time as our workshop.  Dancers registered with our dance workshop can attend their lectures for free and musicians from the music workshop are free to join our lectures and dances.

6. A yoga warm-up  on the beach will be another option for beginning the day.

7. We have a Scholarship Fund! Please click to the workshop page and then scroll down to the bottom for more information.
