In celebration of the men and women who serve and protect us in the armed forces, this month we bring you some interesting facts about the nation's and Oklahoma's veterans.  The Census Bureau has published this set of infographics detailing statistics regarding veterans in each state, including data on  sex, age distribution,  education level and income.

Veteran Statistics:  Oklahoma
  • Oklahoma is home to 312,492 veterans - one and a half percent of the nation's total veteran population. 
  • Almost 11% of Oklahoma's civilian population age 18 and over are veterans, ranking Oklahoma as the eighth highest among the states.
  • Over a third of both the state's and the nation's veterans served during the Vietnam era, making this the largest group by period of service, followed by those who served during peacetime.  
  • Over 40% of the state's and the nation's veterans are age 65 or older.
  • Oklahoma veterans are less likely than the nation's to be unemployed, with rates of 4.0 and 5.3, respectively.  
  • According to the 2014 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, an estimated 408 Oklahoma veterans are homeless.  
  • Oklahoma veterans tend to earn less than those from other states, with a median household income of $55,620 compared to $61,884 nationally.
  • Veterans living in Oklahoma are more like than others nationally to use VA health care services, to have a service-connected disability rating and to lack health insurance.
  • Although Oklahoma's veterans are a little less likely than the nation's veterans to have earned a bachelor's degree or higher, approximately the same percentage are currently enrolled in college.
