Dateline DA December 2014

December is a month of gratitude. From family and friends to good food, there is so much for us to be thankful for; and Denver Academy students and faculty have just as many ways of expressing their gratitude. Here are just some of the many service projects students orchestrated this holiday season.

The Middle School recently helped uproot weeds from summer flowers, clearing over 20 flower beds in Washington Park for which they received a formal letter of thanks from the Denver Parks and Recreation Department.

"I liked being responsible with the tools and watching the compactor in the truck," said 7th grader Jake Levinson, a student in Mr. Joe Senne's homeroom.

The Denver Academy High School also has various community service projects throughout the year, many of which are organized by individual grades. Sophomores, for example, plan a food drive every February, and Seniors are currently hosting the "Undie 500" to donate undergarments to the homeless.

Many of the most well known upper school traditions, however, involve the entire High School. A prime example is Adopt A family, an all high school campaign, spearheaded by Student Senate, that fulfills the wish lists of underprivileged families. These wish lists range from toys to clothes, and it is truly heartwarming to see the faces of the families we serve. We are excited that this tradition has spread across the entire school this year, with many Elementary classrooms and other divisions joining in the good works.

Another multi-grade service opportunity is the Knippenberg dinner. The dinner, which serves dinner to the homeless during the holidays, is served in part by volunteers from the National Honor Society chapter of Denver Academy, who also supply gift baskets to the attendees.

While many of our biggest service projects take place during the holidays, our service learning--and our gratitude--continues all year round.

Best Wishes,

Ian Cable

Scholastic Book Fair Update

Thank you so much for your support at our Scholastic Book Fair! We had an extremely successful fair, selling over $5,000 worth of items (we'll have over $2,900 of that come back to the library and literacy specialists). We also were able to put nearly $300 in classrooms thanks to classroom wish list donations, and we raised nearly $70 for Adopt-a-Family. Our parent and student volunteers were also amazingly helpful. They did everything from providing snacks for the teachers to creating decorations for the fair to setting up, staffing and packing up the fair. We are so grateful for your support and generosity! View photos of the event!

Ticket to Ride? light rail

Did you know that the RTD light rail stops two blocks from DA (on Bellaire and Evans)? Are you tired of getting stuck in traffic on the highway? If you would like to know if the light rail might be a feasible option for your family check the RTD websiteThere are discount tickets available at King Soopers, and if an adult rides with a child with a special need (ADHD, dyslexia, etc.) the adult can ride for free. If you have further questions please contact Sarah Kreider, mother of 6th grader Diego Quezada.

Teacher Wish Lists childrens-bookshelf.jpg

Our recent book fair allowed teachers to receive classroom library wish list items, but some teachers still have remaining wish list items. If you'd like to gift items to a teacher, go here to see current lists. If your child's teacher isn't listed, please contact Jolene Gutierrez and she'll touch base with the teacher. Please also inform Jolene of items purchased so she can keep the list updated.

Give to DA on Colorado Gives Day

You can make your Annual Fund donation to Denver Academy on Colorado Gives Day Tuesday, December 9, 2014. Colorado Gives Day is an annual statewide movement to celebrate and increase philanthropy in Colorado through online giving.

Every nonprofit receiving a donation on Colorado Gives Day receives a portion of the Incentive Fund. For example, if we receive 1 percent of the total donations made on Colorado Gives Day, we will receive 1 percent of the $1 Million Incentive Fund. Your gift to DA on Colorado Gives Day increases the value of every dollar you donate.

Don't wait, you can schedule your donation now!

We hope every DA parent will join faculty and staff in donating to the Annual Fund. Your gift will benefit every DA student this school year. You can make your donation to the DA Annual Fund on Colorado Gives Day through coloradogives.org. We will be notified as soon as you schedule your donation! Giving is a choice. We hope you choose to give to Denver Academy.

Senate Outlook

This December, the High School Student Senate is hard at work with the annual Adopt a Family drive. This is the annual gift giving campaign where students shop for families that are struggling to have a happy holiday this season. There are a total of seven families that the Denver Academy student body will be serving, making this year's Adopt a Family drive one of the biggest Denver Academy has ever had. The Student Senate will also assist in serving the homeless during the Knippenberg family dinner.

ACT Accommodations

Typically, many juniors take advantage of the February ACT test date. If your student is one of those--and he or she needs testing accommodations--you must have your paperwork submitted by December 19, 2014. Take a look at the registration instructions and contact Gayle Bell with any questions.
