Dateline DA January 2014
"In the summer of 1984, I read a series in the Rocky Mountain News about the plight of the homeless and mentally ill adults in Denver," recalls Craig Knippenberg, former Denver Academy Board Member and longtime friend of the School. "While President Kennedy's earlier initiatives started moving patients out of large institutions, his dream of these people being welcomed into caring neighborhoods was never realized. Most were warehoused in smaller boarding homes and remained extremely isolated from the rest of the world around them."

DA Students Man the Serving Line at the Knippenberg Dinner for the Homeless
|
A seminary student at the time, Knippenberg had worked with a church in Virginia who hosted a dinner club for those in need. Using that as a basic model, he approached his church, Prince of Peace Lutheran on S. Colorado Blvd--just two blocks from the current DA campus--about organizing such a program in Denver. A year later, they started with a $50 monthly budget, a handful of volunteers and began the Prince of Peace Aftercare Social Club.
Over the years, the program grew in numbers and the types of support it provided. Having just celebrated its 29th anniversary, it hosts an average of 80 guests for a monthly home cooked meal, an activity (i.e. bingo, talent night), a food bank, a clothes bank and an optional church service.
"Some of our fondest memories are of the Christmas celebrations when the students from Denver Academy have come to help serve," recalls Craig. "It's given students a chance to make a meaningful difference in our guests' lives, and as well, learn about those who truly struggle to get by in the world."
