As you are most likely aware, Denver Academy is excited to provide honors coursework to students who posses the interest, ability and motivation to meet the challenge of advanced academics. This coming fall, we will offer courses in the subjects of English/Literature (grades 9-12) and Science (grades 10-12). We feel strongly that these courses are an integral component of our differentiated curriculum, providing a full array of opportunities for all students based on their aptitudes, achievements and interests.
Students applying for honors courses should follow the instructions outlined in the application and be sure to turn in their completed paperwork by Friday, May 9, 2014 to their division dean.
Should you have questions, feel free to contact me. Thanks for your support in making Denver Academy an exceptional institution!
Sincerely,
Denver Academy

Professional Development Day
In May each year, we have a Professional Development Day where teachers and staff are recognized for their hard work throughout the year, culminating with one teacher being recognized as Teacher of the Year and a staff member as Staff Member of the Year. Nominations come in the form of letters or any other expressive medium from parents, students and employees at Denver Academy.
We would like to encourage everyone to take a few minutes to recognize a teacher and staff member. More information can be found in the teacher nomination form and staff member nomination form. Please submit nominations to Cynthia Richardson by May 9 (deadline extended from 5/2).
Volunteer of the Year
Denver Academy is fortunate to have many dedicated volunteers who enhance our ability to provide an outstanding education to our students. Every year we select a person to receive the Volunteer of the Year Award. Please take the time to honor one of the volunteers who make a difference at our school. Nomination forms are due to Karen Lozow by May 9.
Calling all Library Books!
In order to prepare for our end-of-year inventory, our final due date for library items is May 2. Any students who haven't returned or paid for library items will have their yearbooks held at our Yearbook Party in mid-May (all students will be notified of items out by their teacher, via email, and/or by a personal visit from Mrs. Gutiļæ½rrez). Final transcripts, report cards and diplomas are also held at the end of the year if a student still has library materials out. Please contact Jolene Gutierrez with any questions.

Over 250 members of the DA Community attended the DA Gala on April 26. It was great fun seeing how everyone interpreted the theme through their outfits!
Highlights of the evening included the video of Mazzi Childers' book, The Day I Discovered Denver Academy and hearing the success story of alumnus, Jim Mohrbacher. Jim told us how he hated school before he came to DA. A staff person at his old public school told his parents he would be lucky to graduate from high school.
Jim graduated from Fort Lewis College in December with a degree in accounting and then interned at a Big Four accounting firm in Denver. He has been offered a full-time position and will begin his job as soon as he has enough credit hours to be licensed as a CPA. He will also attend the University of Denver this fall to earn his Master's Degree in Accountancy.
It was a great evening for the DA community. Thank you if you attended, donated, sponsored, volunteered or helped in any way. We look forward to sharing with you the fund raising results in the near future. Look at more Gala pics on our Facebook page!

Alumni Walk
Honoring the past and paving the way for the future. Denver Academy invites you to celebrate your connection to DA by purchasing a personalized brick in the Alumni Walk. Located at the beautiful and historic gated corner of Iliff and Birch streets, your brick will create a meaningful reminder of your loved one's time at DA.
We hope you will join in supporting the next generation of Denver Academy students. The funds raised from purchased bricks will support the Denver Academy Scholarship Endowment Fund. Please consider purchasing a brick and invest in the future students of DA.
Many bricks record a graduate's name and year of graduation. Others hint at secrets. Each holds a story. Inscribed bricks may be purchased for $125 each. Purchase them on our website or call Shelley Devitt in the Development Office at ext. 325.

Little Shop of Horrors
The DA Players are presenting "Little Shop of Horrors," May 1-3 at 7:00 p.m. and May 4 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 for students and $7.00 for adults if reserved online. They cost one dollar more if purchased at the door. In this campy musical based on the 1960's cult horror film, nerdy Seymour Krelbourn feeds and nourishes a Venus flytrap-like plant to terrifying results. Winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award, the play satirizes everything from science fiction, "B" movies, musical comedy and even the Faust Legend. And the upbeat rock music by Alan Mencken and Howard Ashman is a sure crowd pleaser!

Elementary Year End Parent Potluck
Please join us for a kid-free evening of cocktails, conversation, food and fun! Meet other elementary parents, share your summer camp plans and set play dates for those long, summer days.

PGA Golf in Schools
Elementary students spent four days learning and practicing their golf skills thanks to the DA PE Department and the PGA Golf in Schools Program. For the first three days students practiced on campus (sometimes in the gym because of gale-force winds), but on the fourth day of the program, students and teachers traveled to Wellshire Golf Course to chip, putt and swing on the greens.
The best part? The program was taught by actual PGA Pros! The PGA Golf in Schools Program aims to introduce school-age children to the game of golf and the life skills it teaches. For more pictures, check out our Facebook page!
Denver Academy's FIELD DAY is Approaching!
Friday, May 23 will be the annual Elementary and 6th Grade Field Day! This event will run from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. over in the gym and on the baseball field (with a break for lunch from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.). This year's theme will be Dr. Suess!
The Physical Education Department has worked hard to prepare silly, yet challenging, events for students to show off their skills. Spectators are welcome and encouraged! For parents who are willing to volunteer, please contact Kyra Ruscio, Head of Physical Education, at ext. 333.
