Dateline DA September 2013

Greetings!

Please enjoy the following article written by Rebecca Laurie, Public Relations Director at the History Colorado Center, about Denver Academy's recent teacher training at the Center.

Right around this time of year, there's a lot of buzz

that takes place about students getting back to school after a long summer break. Often the stories involve the challenges students face with the summer slide. Yet some administrators, at least those charged with prepping their faculty for the new academic year before the students rush in, also see a similar challenge ahead of them. They must effectively engage their faculty--who, like their students, also had a summer away from the classroom--about all of the new goals, developments and programs taking place during the school year that teachers must get prepared for.

Taking a cue from those teachers who enjoy taking their students out of the classroom and involving them in experiential learning activities as a way to reinforce the curriculum taking place in the classroom, some administrators are now finding value in offering a similar experience for their faculty.

Teachers enjoy the Bent's Fort trading game at History Colorado Center

Philippe Ernewein, Director of Education at Denver Academy, chose to get his faculty ready for the new school year off campus at the History Colorado Center.

He sees a variety of advantages to taking this approach opposed to preparing his faculty at the school.  "One of my objectives is to get our teachers out of the classroom and for them to see themselves as adult learners, and museums like the History Colorado Center are the untapped place where I can take them to reinforce that," said Ernewein. "We can take advantage of the wealth of resources right in our own backyard and the experiential learning opportunities that are available to us, and in turn, this can translate into a more meaningful school year for both teacher and student," he said.

History Colorado responded by customizing their professional development programs to the school's needs. The response from teachers was overwhelmingly positive.

"It was a fantastic opportunity to see what is happening in the public sector of museum education and then apply inspiration gained to real opportunities available at DA," said a DA faculty member. "Lots of applicable learning practices."

Do You Celebrate ADD?

DA parent and author Elizabeth Pedley (pen name, Sylvia Forrest) tells us in her Huffington Post blog why she doesn't stress the prevalent ADD in her household, in fact she celebrates it.  Check out this wonderful article today!

Mustang Net is Here!

Denver Academy is excited to announce Mustang Net--a secure online portal for students and parents to access important school information such as:

  • student schedule
  • class assignments
  • class announcements
  • teacher contact information

Login information and instructions will be distributed at Back to School Night on September 12th.

Experiential Education
A long-standing Denver Academy tradition is experiential week, which is March 26-28, 2014. During these magical days, students in grades 7-12 are able to participate in educational opportunities that are outside our normal classroom walls and with students and teachers from other divisions, ranging from middle school to high school.  Teachers are busy planning and creating wonderful programs, which will span a variety of costs and locations (including international, national, regional, and local locales).  The packets and forms will be available to seniors beginning approximately October 21st and to 7th-11th grades approximately November 5th.  These programs are required. If you have any questions, please ask Vanessa Fritzsche or Virginia Hermann.

Author of the Month

Our Author of the Month/Writers' Square program is a campus-wide enrichment program that exposes students to a variety of writing styles and authors. Information about these authors may be included in library and classroom lessons, and throughout the year, students will have opportunities to share their own writing and to meet with or Skype with published authors.

Our Author of the Month for September is Marc Tyler Nobleman. Read more about his works (get excited comic book fans!) and how DA is connecting with him this month

Got Tech Support?

Sometime technology can be frustrating and confusing. Good thing DA has a crack team of IT specialists. Over the summer the IT staff created this great mini-site to help answer common questions they receive from DA students and parents. Check it out today!

Junk Needed (Seriously)

Need a reason to clean out your garage? Now you have one. Denver Academy's Arts & Media Department is looking for junk. Our students frequently use these hand-me-downs for mixed media art, Project Runway creations and techy pursuits.

Items needed:

Computers (no monitors), VCRs, cameras, small electronics, hula hoops, old t-shirts, art supplies, kitchen utensils, toys, jewelry, looms, sewing machines, fabric, notions, yarn, action figures, bath towels, washcloths, sheets & pillowcases, flatware, dishes, cups, bowls, pots & pans, totplates, griddles, blenders, etc.

If you have any of these items (in working order or not) and would like to get rid of them, bring them on in to the art building or the front office. Questions? Contact Bev Ball.

Hot Nights-Adult Art Education

When parents and other adults come into the DA art studio they often say, "Wow. I want to do that." Well, now you can.

Art teachers Kris Fritzche and Bev Ball are teaching ceramics and welding classes for adults. Nicknamed, "Hot Nights," these evening classes are open to all interested adults and proceeds will benefit the DA Arts & Media Department. Classes start soon. Learn more and enroll today!

Reading Programs

It's not too late for your students to participate in the Summer Reading program and earn homework passes! Forms are due Sept. 23, so students and their families still have time to participate. For more information or to download the Summer Reading form, visit our Library mini-site

We also offer a Hooked on Books reading/prize program for Elementary through High School during the school year. For more information including prize lists and the Middle/High School submission form, go here

Book Fair-Save the Date!

We will be hosting the Scholastic Book fair in the Johnson Commons of Richardson Hall November 11-15. This is a great opportunity to purchase gifts for teachers, friends and family. All proceeds will benefit the Library and the Literacy Specialists. If you're interested in volunteering, please contact Jolene Gutierrez.

Online Resources

Denver Academy Library subscribes to many online databases and resources, including the comprehensive EBSCO databases and more specific databases like CultureGrams. Learn more and watch video screencasts that walk you through many topics.

Parents of Adopted Children Support Group

Historically, the Denver Academy student population is approximately 1/3 adopted children. The DA Parents of Adopted Children Support Group meets monthly (3rd Wednesday of each month) to share experiences, tell our unique adoption stories, ask questions, learn, give and get advice, celebrate successes and work through hardships and struggles. Raising adopted children can bring unique issues that only other adoptive parents can understand. Come share with other parents who understand.

Admissions Open Houses

Do you know a child that could benefit from a DA education? Be sure to let your friends know about our upcoming DA Admissions Open Houses. Prospective parents and students can come learn about our school, take a tour and talk to our student ambassadors and Admissions staff. www.denveracademy.org/openhouse

Next Open House: November 9 , 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
