Dateline DA September 2014

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! We are off to a great start and it is fun to see the excitement and optimism on the faces of our students. The campus truly comes alive when the students return. We are thrilled to welcome 100 new families to our Denver Academy community as well as welcome back our fantastic returning families.

As the Heads of the Lower School and High School, we are responsible for running the day to day operations. We are here for you as well as your children, and look forward to working in partnership with you this year.

September is a busy month; the following are some important events to keep in mind:

Back to School Night is on September 11 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity to meet with your child's homeroom teacher and get a better understanding of the curriculum and what to expect for the year. We highly recommend that you attend.

Our high school and middle school after school clubs will begin the week of September 15. Clubs are a great way to try new things and expand social opportunities. Please check out the fun (and free!) offerings for this quarter.

Our first parent-teacher conference day is September 19. There will be no school for students on this day. Be on the look out for information from your child's teacher regarding specifics.

Fall athletics (soccer, golf, cross-country and volleyball) are underway, as well as our Elementary Sports Program (ESPm). Please contact Mick Mclaughlin for questions about our athletic programs and Jon Hill about ESPm.

Finally, we would like to extend our thanks to the Denver Academy Parent Association (DAPA) for hosting the all-school picnic as well as the first day coffee. These were well attended and provided all of us a wonderful opportunity to meet other members of the DA community. We look forward to the other great events that DAPA has planned for us this school year.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Lori Hull

Head of the Lower School

Mark Wood

Head of High School

Parents of Adopted Kids Group

Historically, the Denver Academy student population is approximately 1/3 adopted children. The DA Parents of Adopted Kids Group meets monthly from 8:15-9:30 a.m. (3rd Wednesday of each month) to share experiences, tell our unique adoption stories, ask questions, learn, give and get advice, celebrate successes and work through hardships unique to those with an adopted child. Our first meeting will be on September 17. Questions? Contact Liz Clark in the Counseling Department.

Experiential Education
A long-standing Denver Academy tradition is experiential week, which is March 25-27, 2015 this school year. During these magical days, students are able to participate in educational opportunities that are outside our normal classroom walls, and with students and teachers from other divisions, ranging from middle school to high school (they learn through experience!). Teachers are busy planning and creating wonderful programs, which will span a variety of costs and locations, including international, national, regional and local locales. The packets and forms will be available to seniors beginning approximately October 10 and to 7th-11th grades approximately October 17. These programs are required. If you have any questions, please ask Vanessa Fritzsche or Virginia Hermann.

Book Fair--Save the Date!

We will be hosting the Scholastic Book Fair in the Johnson Commons of Richardson Hall November 7-14. This is a great opportunity to purchase gifts for teachers, friends and family, and all proceeds will benefit the Library and the Literacy Specialists. If you're interested in volunteering or providing food for our teacher preview, please contact Jolene Gutierrez or Tammy Curran.

Best Friends best friends

If you have spent any time on our quad recently you may have admired our newest bronze sculpture, Best Friends, located in front of the Elementary Building. Commissioned by generous alumni parents, Sam and Nancy Gary, Best Friends is dedicated to Amy McMartin Wood, the wife of High School Dean Mark Wood. Amy passed away four years ago after a courageous fight against ovarian cancer. The sculptor is alumni parent Robert Allison. Next time you are on the quad please take a seat on the cement bench that is incorporated into the sculpture and enjoy your day!

Reading Programs and Online Resources

It's not too late for your students to participate in the Summer Reading Program and earn homework passes! Forms are due Sept. 22, so students and their families still have time to participate. We also offer a Hooked on Books reading/prize program for Elementary through High School during the school year.

In addition, Denver Academy Library subscribes to many online databases and resources, including the comprehensive EBSCO databases and more specific databases like CultureGrams.

Senior teachers, Carey Eskesen and Bobby Duhamel, along with the Director of College and Transition, Jill Corbin, and DA Counselor, Liz Clark, will lead a series of booktalks based on
Letting Go: A Parents' Guide to Understanding the College Years by Karen Levin Coburn and Madge Lawrence Treeger.

This group will meet on late-start Wednesdays, from 8:00-9:30 a.m., beginning in October. Please plan to attend the first meeting to receive your book. Thanks to DAPA for their generous funding support of the book. Please send questions to Carey Eskesen.

6th Grade First Week Hike hike

Denver Academy sixth graders experienced the annual first week hike up at Elk Meadows in Evergreen. Students and teachers spend the day community building and getting to know one another while out in nature. Out on the trail, they participated in a group photo scavenger hunt and had a picnic lunch. What a great way to start of the year!

Alumni Walk--Honoring the Past and Paving the Future

alumniwalk2

Over one hundred bricks have been installed in the Alumni Walk since its inception in 2006. We hope you will join with these families and consider a brick for your student to commemorate their time at DA. An inscribed brick creates a special and lasting legacy and helps to pave the way for future students.

Alumni Bricks can be purchased for $125 and the proceeds go directly to the Denver Academy Scholarship Endowment Fund. Your gift will help us to provide an opportunity for deserving students who will need financial assistance to attend Denver Academy.

Many bricks record a graduate's name and year of graduation. Others hint at secrets. Each holds a story. Inscribed bricks may be purchased for $125 each. Purchase them on our website or just call Shelley in the Development Office at ext. 325.
