January 11, 2017 ~~ Happy New Year!
Author Dave Eggers in Bend January 19
Dave Eggers is the next visiting writer in Deschutes Public Library Foundation's Author! Author! literary series. His novel The Circle has been adapted as a major motion picture starring Tom Hanks and Emma Roberts (premiering in April). Eggers is the award-winning author of 11 books and the founder of independent publisher McSweeney's and a co-founder of 826 National, a network of tutoring centers around the country. Is 2017 Your Year to Volunteer? We Can Help.
If you're looking for a new opportunity to serve your community, you don't want to miss the upcoming Volunteer Expo at the Downtown Bend Library. More than 20 local agencies that use volunteers to reach and serve will be on hand to answer questions about how you can help. Stop by any time between noon and 3:00 on January 22  to meet with representatives from a variety of organizations including the Bethlehem Inn, the Deschutes Land Trust, the Bend Food Project, the Humane Society of Central Oregon and over a dozen more.
New Citizenship Corner at Redmond Library
The Redmond Library now has a Citizenship Corner, a resource designed by the department of U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services to raise awareness about the naturalization process. Here residents and immigrants can find the information and resources they need to start the path toward becoming a U.S. citizen. It includes "toolkits" that contain civics flash cards, civics lessons, the Declaration of Independence, and information about the citizenship test and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. The Citizenship Corner is only in Redmond, but materials can be put on hold at and delivered to any of our other locations.
Load Up on Books at the Winter Book Sale!
The Friends of the Bend Libraries hosts their Winter Book Sale January 21 & 22. It's a good time to load up on great books at a great price. You'll find books from all genres and for all ages. You'll even find audio books and movies. Saturday's sale starts with a members only event from 9:00-11:00 a.m., but becoming a member is easy---just $10 for individuals and $5 for students and seniors. The sale opens to the public at 11:00 and continues on Sunday, January 22

Holiday & Weather-related Closures
All Deschutes Public Libraries will be closed on Monday, January 16, for the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday. Online digital resources, like eBooks and streaming movies and music, will still be accessible via our website.

The series of storms hitting Central Oregon may result in a library closure; we strive to remain open until it's no longer safe to have staff or customers on the roads. Our website and Facebook page provide immediate updates if any closures are happening. Be sure to check our web calendar for up-to-the-minute information on any program cancellations.
