Spotlight on a great neighborhood is a "coastal city of dreamy fairy tales"

Ok, it's our first day and we're already cheating...
But in thinking about development, we couldn't ignore the increasing commerce across all of Vermilion's Downtown.  So on Day 12 of our countdown, we're going to highlight one thriving neighborhood and five of its businesses.

A travel blogger had much to say about Vermilion this September and its "s mall, intimate shops, an ornate blend of architectural influences, and bright bursts of color provide a cheery environment that sets the scene for an unforgettable day."

The pleasant environment Downtown welcomed 5 new additions this year adding to its already diverse retail, service and food and beverage scene:

Symphony's Massage & Spa - Rising Northeast Ohio star, Symphony, opened a second location this summer in Downtown Vermilion.  After their renovations, the refresh and tranquility are here to stay at 5541 Liberty Ave.

Cast On Yarn Studio  - Whether a novice,  hobbyist, casual knitter or design pro, you can now find the classes, yarn and knitting supplies you need at Cast On Studio.

Harbour Town Massage - Owner Jolee Hill visited  Vermilion for the first time in June 2017. She was charmed by Vermilion and just 18 days later signed a lease to open her first business.

Elizabeth's DiscoveryBurning River Boutique cater to artisans and lovers of fine things.  At Elizabeth's you can find apparel, records, art and other curated  collectibles .  Burning River Boutique offers custom framing and a gallery for local artists. It is a unique "adoption center for paintings, photos, sculptures & other 'Necessary Luxuries' looking for a good home."

The importance of retail and service industries can often be overlooked in traditional economic development strategies which tend to favor industries that produce goods and export outside the region.   However, Erie County's vibrant retail and service industries can't be ignored.   The industry employs close to 11,000 people and contribute nearly 40% of our Gross Regional Product, with much of this coming from visitors who bring their wealth and spend in our community.   More importantly, these industries contribute  an opportunity  for entrepreneurs culture and neighborhood vibrancy and valuable  work experience for youth and others developing skills  and their  career .

The 12 Days of Development email series recognizes and celebrates another year of progress in Erie County, Ohio.  Each day this week and next you will receive an email spotlight on a company investing, improving and innovating in our community. We can't capture it all, so let us know a neighbor we missed or what activities you've got planned to make the 2018 list.
