A Personal Note from Susan
Many of you know that part of
my self-care includes two months annually, September and January, where I abstain from alco
. This practice began in my 20's as a checks and balance due to the fact that alcoholism exists in my family. I
t was important to me to always be sure that I did not have this disease of addiction
. In the beginning it was difficult. I felt I had to
rearrange my social calendar to avoid outings that would include alcohol
. I removed all alcohol from my home and
became laser focused on nutrition and physical activity during those months
. That is no longer the case.
I continue with this healthy practice as more of a reset button, to jump start a cleanse of sorts, and to
demonstrate to my children responsible drinking habits. Lately, I find there is
a part of me that would like to inspire others to consider a sabbatical. Perhaps alcohol is not your vice.
I invite you to pause, right now, for just a few moments. Consider the
habits that you have developed that at times feel unhealthy, or potentially problematic. It could be the obvious areas of
healthier nutrition, increasing your water intake or making time for physical movement in your life. Or, it could involve something less obvious;
like someone you need to forgive, finding a spiritual ritual that speaks to you, or ending the procrastination of moving toward your dreams.
If you give yourself the gift of slowing down, and asking yourself,
in what area of my life do I want to see improvement or change; I promise you,
the answer will be there. Once you determine what it is that you want to change or improve,
pick a month and call it a sabbatical if that word resonates for you, and commit to making the change for the full month.
This process is very empowering, and keeping your word to yourself is the only thing that really matters. Share with me your thoughts and commitment if you'd like, but know that regardless,
I'm rooting for you and supporting you from a distance.

Do You Know the Three Pillars to Sales Success?
I'm often asked by my clients;
what do I need to do to increase my sales? In most cases, I can speak to the
three pillars of sales success that have worked for me and many other business owners. They are
Networking, Speaking and Making Sales Calls. This month I will dive deeper into pillar two, speaking:
Speaking - it's about connecting not selling (in most cases)!
- Identify your POV (Point of View) on a topic of interest to your ideal target
Who are you?
What makes you unique, interesting to chat with, and of value to your ideal target? If the answers to these questions do not come easily for you, then I suggest your first priority is to
make time to reflect on them, journal your thoughts, ask those that are closest to you. This is
not the time to be humble, shy or self-sabotaging.
To have a successful speaking piece to your business model, it is imperative that you not be boring.
Once you have discovered these answers, then you need to incorporate them into the next step.
- Write your Signature Talk and always include a CTA (Call to Action)
Your first priority is to write a signature talk; one that is on brand, relevant to your area of expertise, and
of interest to your ideal target. I'd recommend keeping it 25 - 40 minutes in length, and
remember to include YOUR story. This is a time for you to
be authentic and even a little bit vulnerable so that your audience can relate to you. Again, this is an opportunity for people to begin that very important process referenced last month, "know like and trust".
You will never get anyone to engage in your services, turn over their credit card, until they know, like and trust you!
- Find events/venues to share your message
Now you need to
find a venue where you can share your talk. Initially, do not expect to be compensated.
You will have to earn the right to ask for a fee and that may take several presentations before that occurs.
A couple of easy ways to find speaking opportunities is to
reach out to local associations where your ideal target attends and let the organizer know that you have a topic that would be of interest to their members. You can also
be open to sponsoring an event, with a modest investment; you would receive some PR and perhaps an opportunity to speak briefly to the audience.
Consider practicing your presentation at some small venues that might not be your ideal target such as; local Rotary groups, community chambers, or even your local library.
