                                         A LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTERHeadmaster

Summer greetings from St. Richard's!

The SRES Class of 2014 graduated a little over two weeks ago. One would think our building would have been quiet for awhile following all of the festivities. However, our summer camps kicked off the Monday immediately following the ceremony, and Horizons at St. Richard's will also be welcoming nearly 100 students this week.

The week of graduation we hosted St. Richard's and Trinity Episcopal Church families along with a few local neighborhood leaders for a cookout to celebrate the important contributions the medical professionals in the Atkinson Building provided for the neighborhood for several decades. The Atkinson Building, which we acquired earlier this spring, is one of several buildings we will be removing (and in one case, perhaps moving) to improve visibility of the school and church from Meridian Street and to create space for new ways for us to serve our communities in the future. We hope those of you located in Indianapolis will drive by often this summer to watch the changes unfold. Those of you living elsewhere can check out our progress on the school's website.

This past week, we hosted a lovely event for members of the SRES Class of 2010 who recently graduated from a number of local high schools. These young people are impressive, and they have represented St. Richard's well and accomplished a great deal during their high school careers. I was particularly impressed with their college choices and the passion they have for the different areas of study they plan to pursue. We all know that majors can change and sometimes do multiple times, but I am confident the goodness, gumption, and grit of these young men and women is permanent. Our special thanks to Rev. Dr. Angelique Walker-Smith for putting this event together.

Our Grade 5 students returned last night from Lyon, France and their French Back to Back exchange experience. This important St. Richard's tradition continues to impact our students' lives in powerful ways.

Best wishes for a relaxing and refreshing summer!

David

Once a Dragon, Always a Dragon

Clan, a common term for a group of dragons, seems appropriate for Connie, Rick, and their two daughters Maggie and Katie. They have remained loyal to SRES beyond the days of attending the Ice Cream Social and Mother's Day Bunny. Rick, a former board and foundation board member, has recently agreed to remain the President of Horizons at SRES.  Rick joined Horizons when SRES decided to recommit to the cause over two years ago. With Rick's leadership and dedication, the program is transforming the lives of over 100 under-served children again this summer. While Connie is often seen supporting the efforts of Horizons, she has also provided leadership of her own through being a past Regalia chair.

And just what you might expect from a clan, their daughters (SRES alumni) have continued to carry the torch. Maggie, Vice-President of the SRES Alumni Association, has played an active role in keeping our graduates connected with one another. She and others are tirelessly planning the Rendezvous party, scheduled for August 7, so past parents and alumni can renew their ties with one another and SRES.

Katie Richmond, graduate student of University of Pittsburgh, recently consulted from afar with science teacher Mrs. Ann Papachronis about an innovative prosthetic unit that involved the students designing a prototype after hearing from an accomplished Paralympic athlete. Our hope is that the Alumni Association will encourage families to stay connected with SRES as the Richmond family has.

The mission of St. Richard's Episcopal School Alumni Association is to foster the lifelong connection of the diverse St. Richard's community of graduates, past students and parents, and former and current faculty and staff; to build a culture of philanthropy; to promote the educational goals of the school; and to celebrate the uniqueness of the St. Richard's experience.

Exciting Summer Learning

While some teachers will shut the grade books for a well-deserved break, others will travel as far as Colorado for summer professional development opportunities this year.

Early Childhood teachers Mrs. MacGregor, Mrs. Kilfoil and Mrs. Boerger will attend a nationally renowned conference in Boulder, CO to focus on documenting student work and using innovative assessments. Grade 4 teacher Mrs. Malooley will attend a week-long conference on differentiation, and our World Language teachers will work on curriculum with national educational consultant Laura Terrill.  Cheryl Eiszner, EC and LD music teacher and recipient of the Pip Padgett Award, will take private composition lessons with a doctoral candidate from the Indiana School of Music, all while training to compete in the Transplant Summer Games. Many teachers will also participate in a Visual Thinking Strategies study group throughout the summer in conjunction with our Viewfinders partnership with the IMA.

While many teachers will go beyond the walls of St. Richard's to fine-tune their crafts and prepare for the 2014-2015 school year, great work is happening at 33rd and Meridian Streets. Mrs. Suzann Hummer, our newly named Director of Learning Services with a reading specialist degree from DePaul University, is working closely with Shirley Mullins from Kids Ink bookstore and our teachers to create leveled libraries in the Lower Division classrooms. Thanks to the generosity of the Parent Organization, over $4,000.00 worth of books will be purchased, leveled, and made available to students in the classroom to ensure that we are differentiating literature and texts for the students we serve.  Take that for summers off!

Mrs. Flanagan

Entering her third year of teaching Grade 1 at SRES, Mrs. Carolyn Flanagan certainly does not seem like a newcomer.  And while she can hardly be described as an introvert, there is still much to learn about this Wisconsin-born Dragon.

Mrs. Flanagan's Masters in the Art of Education from National Louis allowed her to work in high-risk environments within the Chicago Public School system.  She also taught English in Nepal for six months and in Ethiopia for a summer. These experiences are aligned with the passion that drives her to continue to teach throughout the summer with some of Indy's most vulnerable children through Horizons at SRES.  Here, Mrs. Flanagan serves as the Kindergarten teacher for 15 spirited and courageous children from the neighborhoods that surround SRES to prevent summer learning loss and devastating drop out rates.

Mrs. Flanagan's immediate love for St. Richard's stems from her ability to have autonomy and freedom in the classroom with the curriculum she teaches. She enjoys creative projects and loves the St. Patrick's Day unit (including being kidnapped by the "leprechauns") since she married into an Irish family.  Mrs. Flanagan particularly enjoys Grade 1 students; she notes that she shares their high energy levels and enthusiasm for learning.

In addition to her career in teaching, Mrs. Flanagan and her husband Steve started and proudly own Indiana Photo Company. Their services were donated at the past two Regalias, and they are also committed to helping local charities, participating in events such as the St. Baldrick's fundraiser. She and Steve live fairly close to school and share a passion of traveling, staying active and watching Indiana basketball among other sports. This past spring break, Mrs. Flanagan hiked Mt. Meru in Tanzini while on a safari. This experience will undoubtedly be creatively tied into her curriculum.  Now if we can only get a handle on those mischievous leprechauns!

Horizons at SRESHorizons
 A Word from the Director

Wednesday June 18th marks another opportunity to broaden the Horizons ™ of our community! This year Horizons will be enriching our students by chaperoning bright and impressionable minds "All Around the World," which is this summer's theme.  The kick-off on June 7th was an opportunity for us to meet our new families and to greet those returning who have called St. Richards home now for a few summers. We are proud to say, by adding 6th grade to our spectrum, we will be serving over 100 students' developmental needs.

This year we have 18 remarkable interns from Park Tudor, Brebeuf, University, North Central and Fishers High School. These high school students, as well as college bound graduates, have dedicated themselves to the Horizons' mission of closing the educational gap of an underserved population. We also have a few of our own Dragons who joined in on this undertaking. They will be all be assisting in the classroom and preparing to plan and lead an hour-long enrichment activity by the end of their commitment.  Though they will be huge assets to the Horizons program, they will also be enhancing their career preparedness in hopes they will learn how to be a valuable commodity to any organization in the future.

Many thanks go to our teachers in advance for using their summer to enrich these students lives through experiential learning plans in the areas of arts, sports, culture, and other extracurricular activities. Last year, the average growth of our students reading and math levels was over 3 months. With a current student:staff ratio of 5:1, we look forward to having amazing growth results again this year. If you are interested in checking out the transformation taking place within SRES in the summer, contact Mariann Bernlohr for a tour.

Thanks to a grant through Horizons, we have a new bus!
