A MESSAGE FROM REV. GREG

Advent season is here and I am almost certain that you are finding that your life is getting much busier.  What is true for your life is also true for the life of the church.  Please make note of the number of ministry happenings that will be part of our celebration of the Christmas season at First Christian.  I encourage you to generously support with your time and resources Jubilee Christmas and Mitten Tree.  Our church makes a significant difference in lives of dozens of families through these two ministries.  I encourage you to attend our worship services this season.  It is my hope that by your attendance and through your acts of service during Advent that you will be reminded of the 'reason for the season' and that your presence will be blessed by God's presence in your life.  I encourage you to take time for prayer and devotion.  To help you with that this season we will be giving out Advent devotionals this Sunday as part of our Hanging of the Greens service.  I look forward to celebrating Christ's birth with you and pray that this Christmas season will be full of blessing for you and your family. God Bless You! See You Sunday!   Peace, Greg

Property Committee Update
The Property Committee wishes to make everyone aware of an item of general interest to our congregation.  The flooring on the second floor of the Education Building is in need of restoration.  It has been in need for some time, but now with the LUM Afterschool Program using this space more heavily, the Property Committee has decided that now is the time to replace the tile and carpeting in some of the class rooms and the hallway.
The Property Committee will be working with Miller's Flooring America.  We cannot do this work while LUM is actively using the areas, but soon we will have a window of opportunity to complete this work.   During the Lafayette School Corporation's Christmas break (Dec 26 - Jan 5) the space is available for Miller's to do the installation.  So if you were planning on using the second floor during this time, please be aware that it will not be available.
In preparation for this project, the Property Committee plans to use volunteers on Saturday December 23 rd to move the furniture into the Kid's Club room.  Our backup plan is to have Miller's move the furniture, but the advantage of doing it ourselves is that we will have a much easier time finding things to put back in their correct places.  So if you are available on that date and willing and able to help the Property Committee, you are invited to join us Saturday December 23 rd at 10:00 AM.  Many hands will make the work easier for all !

Pastoral Search Committee
At the October Board Meeting, a committee was established to search for a Senior Minister to replace Rev. Greg Eberhard after his retirement in January.  Jim Rybka has agreed to chair this committee, which consists of 15 members who are leaders of our various ministries and committees, and Carolyn Reed as an ex-officio Regional representative and advisor.
Everyone should be aware that the interim time (the time between the retirement of the current Pastor and when a new permanent Senior Minister is called and can join us) may be as long as a year or more.  Our committee's first task is to search for an Interim Minister who can lead our congregation during this interim time.  It should be noted that the Interim Minister is a specialist, who is trained in helping congregations through the grief of losing and changing their pastor.  Studies have shown that when a church does not respect the full interim period and rushes to call a new pastor, the result may be detrimental for both the pastor and the congregation.  So please be patient as we search for our next pastor.  It may be a longer and slower process than any of us would like.
Regarding the search for an interim minister, the Region has provided the committee with the names of several candidates.  The committee has met almost every week since it was formed in October and has accomplished a lot: a job description for the interim minister, reviewed several Ministerial Profiles and developed questions to ask not only the candidates but also their references.  We are hopeful that we will have the name of a candidate to bring to the Board shortly, so that we may have an Interim Minister in place as soon as possible after Greg's last Sunday.
In closing, please keep the Pastoral Search Committee in your thoughts and prayers.  And please be patient as we search for the right person to lead us through our interim, and as we later begin our search for the permanent pastor.
Jim Rybka, Chair of the Pastoral Search Committee

Christmas Cantata December 10th at 10am
The birth of Jesus is a scene of awe-inspiring humility:  God in human form, born in a lowly manger for our salvation.  Pepper Choplin's distinctive folk-infused musical style is particularly well suited to capture this story.  Employing a highly inventive mixture of mountain melodies, folk hymns, spirituals, familiar carols, and original music, "Go Sing It on the Mountain" proclaims the good news from the prophet Isaiah's call up to the mountain, to the final exuberant celebration:  "Joy to the world!  Christ is born!"

On November 10-11, CWF women enjoyed a weekend of fellowship, fun, and worship. Thank you to Sharon Owens who shared her talent with glass work  on Friday  evening.  On Saturday , Deanna Brown led us in reflecting about "Ordinary Saints". Thank you to the retreat committee of Donna Adams, Linda Brammel , Nancy Eberhard, Cindy Garvey, Roberta Pilotte, Deb Prewett, Jane Rubesch, and Deb Schneider, led by Carolyn Henry. Also, thanks to Carolyn Kanehe, who donated many of our door prizes. Last, but not least, thank you to the 24 ladies who participated!

As Jubilee Christmas is less than 6 weeks from now, it is time to be considering how you will help with this very much need ministry we do so well.  We will be hosting 35 families on jubilee day this year.  I do not have the exact number of children that we will be providing toys, pajamas, socks, a fleece blanket and a stocking filled with goodies.  But that number will be around 100.  Please shop early this year and help reduce the stress of the committee, especially mine.  The angel tree will be ready for your choosing on November 12th.
At that same time the poster will be in the gathering place for you to sign up to help on Jubilee day.  For those of you that have helped on Jubilee day in the past please seriously consider helping again this year.  For anyone that has never worked it in the past, please consider helping this year.  The rewards are beyond words.  Our guests are very grateful for our help in allowing their family to have a memorable Christmas.
Please ask any of the committee members your questions.  The members are Sue & Dave Kelsey, Roberta Pilotte, Harriet Beeler and Sandie Hauser.
May God Bless you and I look forward to seeing you on Jubilee day.  December 9, 2017 at 10:30 am for brunch.  JUBILEE CELEBRATION WITH THE GUESTS BEGINS AT 12:00 NOON.
