HAPPY HOLIDAYS, LOOKING FORWARD TO 2017
Greetings!
I hope you had a great Thanksgiving and are in good health. Hard to believe this is the last month of 2016. For many families, the holiday season brings joy and happiness with loved ones, a time to reflect on the past and embrace for the new year.
But far too many veterans and their families, this will not be joyful. This is due to our increasingly homelessness of veteran population, unemployment, underemployed, and struggles with both physical and emotional pain can leave many of our nation's finest in distress. You may not be able to pull a family out of homelessness, but taking the time to acknowledge their struggle and connect them with local resources can be a wonderful expression of compassion in a world that so desperately needs it.
Last month, I suddenly lost my wife, partner, and best friend (Tina Marie Haines) of 29 years. She will be sorely missed by me as well as many family and friends. She was kind hearted, loving, fun, and full of life. Tina was also the standing Commander for the Auxiliary (Unit 8). She leaves behind a legacy of her love and spirits that filled the hearts of many. She is now my guardian angel.
In closing, let's have a joyful and safe holiday season.
Thank you and God bless America!
Marvin Haines Jr.
Commander

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Greetings!
We are going to be starting a Service Animal area to share how amazing and helpful they can be. I am looking for submissions with a picture & bio of you and your service animal and how they have helped you. To submit just reply to this newsletter.
We have a guest speaker this month who is a
local motivational speaker and author, Lauri Chamberlin, One of the books in her "Pass it On!" series was written for us, "I Stand for the Flag, I Bow My Head When I Pray" was written following last year's Mesa Veterans Day Parade. Lauri went and stood for the flag, stood for "her Vets" as she tells the story... but very few others stood. It made her sad. She went right home and wrote this book. It's "a simple book with simple principles, reminding us all that Respect is important." She honored us this year by standing with us at our booth at the parade.
Afterward, Lauri will have her books available for purchase for $10 and will do a book signing for us. All proceeds will go directly to our Chapter!
Don't forget, we will be drawing the winner of the Rifle Raffle at this meeting!
I look forward to seeing you at the meeting Thursday Dec 8th at 1830hrs (6:30pm) come early for a hot meal to be served at 1730hrs (5:30pm).
At this time I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holidays!
Peace love & light

THOUGHT'S FROM OUR CHAPLAIN

"
This is often called "The Season of Giving."
Greetings!
And it's true. I observe a lot of generosity around me. Golden Corral patrons have given a lot to the D.A.V. causes in the last 30 days. Churches receive many end-of-year donations.
But the truth is the veteran community gives all through the year, not just in one particular season. You gave when you signed up and raised your right hand, pledging to defend this country's constitution, even with your life if needed.
And, from my own faith tradition, we are called to live a life of giving because of what we have been given. The greatest Gift is God's Very Self. "For to us a Child is born; to us a Son is given ..."
So give. Not just this season, but all year. Give out of the goodness of your heart. Give out of the realization that God is a good and giving God. Give generously, all year, simply because you can and it's the right thing to do!
Gratefully,
Your Chaplain
Paul Soderquist

Our Mission
The mission of
Camp Corral is to transform the lives of children of wounded, disabled, and fallen military heroes by providing a unique summer camp experience.
The vision behind
Camp Corral is one where kids, ages 8 to 15, are free to be kids, far away from the day to day challenges they face as military children coping with change and loss. The reality of a parent being deployed away from home for over a year is the norm for children from military families. And for 87 percent of Camp Corral's campers, a parent coming back injured, disabled or not coming back at all
is their reality. Over 80 percent of campers come from veteran families, where
resources are even more limited. Camp Corral is making a positive impact on these children and their families by fostering a positive change in the children’s lives
Camp is not just a fun week away home; it gives them the opportunity to build supportive relationships with others in similar circumstances, be challenged by new adventures, grow in their independence, and build resilience, all while enjoying "the week of a lifetime.
Our Heroes
Eleven is the average age of our campers, but our campers are far from average. Eighty-seven percent have a parent who is wounded, disabled, or fallen due to military service. Twenty-four percent of campers come from dual military families, and 52% feel that no one understands what it is like being a military child. Having one or both parents deployed and away from home for over a year is the norm for children from military families. The lives of military families have changed enormously since September 11, 2001. Unprecedented levels of deployment and the increased reliance on Reserve and Guard members mean that the number of American children with a parent who is a service member or veteran has increased dramatically. These children face unique challenges and make sacrifices beyond their years. They deserve a unique program like Camp Corral, which provides them with the opportunity to build emotional resilience in a camp setting.
Camp Corral has a major impact on each child, and also on the entire family unit. In addition to the joy and hope parents feel as the result of their child’s camp experiences, they are often able to reconnect as a couple and strengthen their relationship while their child is away.

“State of Women Veterans”
Social Media Campaign
VA launched a “State of Women Veterans” (SOWV) social media campaign. For the next 10 weeks, we will provide weekly segments to explore issues impacting women Veterans and what we are doing to support women Veterans as they face these issues. This campaign aims to start new conversations—online and within communities—about the current state of Women Veterans with regard to education, housing, employment, health and more; raise awareness about VA care and benefits; and encourage partnerships. In collaboration with Women Veterans Interactive (WVI)—and with your help—we can raise public awareness of women Veterans’ military and societal contributions and inform women Veterans about accessing the VA benefits they have earned and deserve. Disabled American Veterans
Mission Statement:
We are dedicated to a single purpose: Empowering veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. We accomplish this by ensuring that veterans and their families can access the full range of benefits available to them; fighting for the interests of America's injured heroes on Capitol Hill; and educating the public about the great sacrifices and needs of veterans transitioning back to civilian life.
