After only a year, the demand for Salus Student Ambassadors is so high that the program has recently added 10 new members to its roster. Each student represents the University at regional, community, and on-campus events--such as commencement and alumni programming--and is also responsible for connecting with prospective students. Audiology Stakeholders Meeting Update



Salus University recently hosted the Audiology Stakeholders meeting. The three audiology associations (ASHA, AAA and ADA) were in attendance, as well as presenters from CDC, AADE, AOA, Pharmacy and Audiology. As of the time of this newsletter, AAA and ADA have joined The Audiology Project initiative focused on diabetic ear disease, to develop educational materials, to begin the process for establishing clinical guidelines and to advocate to raise awareness of this important comorbidity in audiology patients. Salus Again Delivers Thanksgiving Meals 



It's official--for more than a decade now, a team of Salus University and Culinart Café staff members have provided Thanksgiving Day meals to a variety of community members. In this 11th year of cooking, packing and delivering turkeys and other holiday food, recipients included 15 Jenkintown Police Department officers and staff, 50 Cheltenham Township Police Department officers and staff, and 20 families at the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge of the American Cancer Society in Cheltenham, which offers no-cost lodging to patients who are undergoing cancer treatment in the Philadelphia area. Beginning in January 2017, the Office of Student Affairs will be offering a new service as part the redesigned Bennett Career Services Center.  Salus University CareerLink is a Career Services Management system and online job portal, connecting students and alumni with leading employers in their respective disciplines. CareerLink will also contain tools and resources to help students transition to practice and prepare for success in today's healthcare environment. Alumni Insurance Program Open Enrollment 
 
The Salus University Alumni Association is pleased to sponsor an Alumni Insurance Program as a service to our graduates. The program offers a variety of attractively priced insurance products, most of which are available to alumni, students, faculty and staff, as well as their spouses, domestic partners, parents, children, and siblings. Open enrollment runs now through January 31, 2017 . Read more

Remembering Joseph Toland OD '54, MD 

Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry professor Joseph Toland OD '54, MD, passed away on Sunday, December 4. In his announcement, President Mittelman-a student of Dr. Toland-called him a true icon, advocate, activist and leader who played a pivotal role in ensuring optometrists were able to practice at the levels at which they were being taught. As President Mittelman noted, "Without his courage to stand up to organized medicine back in the 1970s, it might have taken years for PCO to establish the current medical model for which it is renowned." Hometown ASHA Convention Proves Successful 

For the Salus University Department of Speech-Language Pathology, being a young program at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) convention that took place in Philadelphia on November 17-19 was a winning combination. Dozens of students, faculty, and staff from the University attended, including all five SLP faculty members and all 55 first-and-second-year students in the program, plus clinical educators and Audiology professors. Recent Scholarship Recipients
                              

Congratulations to MPH students Aaron Harsch '18OD and Elizabeth Nace '18OD who were each awarded a 2016 John Whitener Family Scholarship. The scholarship was named after Dr. John Whitener, a former Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) adjunct faculty member who helped create the Master of Public Health program at Salus University. He was inducted as a Distinguished Practitioner by the National Academies of Practice in 2011.

We also congratulate the University's 2016 VSP Global Practice Excellence scholarship recipients, Carly J. Grondin '17OD and Jenna Roney '17OD. Two students from each school or college of optometry were selected by nomination of their individual institutions to receive the scholarship.
Alumni Association Awards Call for Submissions 
 
The Alumni Association annually bestows awards on deserving alumni and friends of Salus University. Submit your nomination for the 2017 Alumni Association Awards by December 31, 2016. The nominations will be reviewed by the Association board in January, who will announce the recipients by the end of January. Read more
AuDACITY Award Winners and Honorees
 


Congratulations to all who received special recognition and awards at November's AuDACITY conference in San Diego. Victor Bray, MSC, PhD, FNAP, received the David Goldstein Outstanding Audiology Award; Robert DiSogra AuD '03 received the Joel Wernick Award; and Angela Morris, AuD '03 is president elect.
