A Month for Habitat
Being Grateful for How Fortunate We Are

"Choosing to be positive and having a grateful attitude is going to determine how you're going to live your life." ~Joel Osteen

The holiday season is always an appropriate time to take a few minutes, pause, and reflect on the gifts you've been given, the people you love and cherish, and the opportunities you are afforded in life. Giving gratitude with consciousness and pure intentions reduces stress and brings greater joy to your celebrations.

Participating in "A Month of Habitat" allows you to be mindful of the many gifts that surround you that may be taken for granted. Think of the people with no homes...no roof over their head, no closet space, no dishwasher, no tv, no garage door opener, no washer & dryer. By spending a moment each day to focus your thoughts, prayers and actions on the need for decent, affordable housing Habitat can keep the mission of building houses, community, and hope alive in the Mahoning Valley.

Your monthly contributions can be mailed to us at:

O' Christmas Tree, O' Christmas Tree
The Joy of a Christmas Tree

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree in NYC has been lit, officially kicking off the holiday season. For the 10th year in a row, wood from the tree will be donated to Habitat for Humanity once the holidays are over.

In the Plaza, the tree is cut into large pieces, which are then transported to a mill in New Jersey that does the initial rough sawing. Those pieces are then brought to a landscaping company where they're dried in a kiln and then milled and planed to get them straight and smooth. Only 2x4 and 2x6 beams are made. The finished beams are then stamped, shrink-wrapped and shipped to the Habitat for Humanity affiliate chosen to receive the lumber. The amount of lumber varies based on the size of the tree.

The Norway Spruce, estimated to be at least 90 years old, weighs 14 tons and stands at 94 feet with a width of 56 feet. It is decorated with more than 50,000 multi-colored, energy-efficient LED lights strung on five miles of wire and powered by solar panels located atop the buildings at Rockefeller Center.

Norway spruce lumber is usually creamy white in color and fine-grained. It's flexible and durable, which makes it ideal for blocking (the filling, spacing, joining or reinforcing of frames), flooring, furniture and cabinetry. It is a softer wood, though, so it's not intended for load-bearing walls.

A Swarovski crystal star tops the tree. The star has 25,000 crystals, measures 9 ½ feet in diameter, and weighs 550 pounds. The star's 12 rays are also outfitted with 720 LED bulbs. The first tree in 1933 had just 700 lights.

This year's tree came from the Oneonta, NY property of Angie and Graig Eichler. It was cut down on Nov. 10 and arrived at Rockefeller Center on Nov. 12. Since then, it has required 30 gallons of water a day to stay full and fresh.

Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley (HFHMV) has it's own local Christmas tree on display for the Winter Celebration at Mill Creek MetroParks Fellows Riverside Gardens.

From December 3-31 from 10am-5pm (Closed Mondays & Christmas Day) you can experience the annual holiday tree walk, a student-led Chihuly inspired display, and seasonal blooms. The Electric Garden is on display until 8pm on December 3 & 4, 10 & 11, 17 & 18 when the grounds will be lit with thousands of twinkling lights. Remember to also stop in the Shop in the Gardens to find the perfect gift and savor refreshments available for purchase in Kravitz's Garden Cafe.

HFHMV Has Some Exciting News
The Rehab on Lake Road in Austintown is Done

Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning Valley (HFHMV) is very pleased to announce a house dedication for 4271 Lake Road, Austintown, OH 44511. The dedication will take place on Tuesday, December 13th at 10am.

The house was generously donated to us and has gone through a complete rehab process.  Our Construction Manager, Michael Ondrey, along with HFHMV's two AmeriCorps Construction Leads (Ceyanne and Ruth) have worked tirelessly with hundreds of volunteers to get this rehab looking amazing. Great work to ALL of the Habitat crew and many volunteers who helped out (special call-out to Leah, our AmeriCorps Volunteer Coordinator, who scheduled people to help on site as well secured lunch donations).

The house was done for the Elliott Family who is very excited to be in the house before the Holidays!

Here are some before & in progress pics ("after" pics will be posted next month once the house has been dedicated).

Become a Sign-A-Stud Sponsor
Be a part of a home without even swinging a hammer!

The Youngstown Columbiana Association of Realtors (YCAR) has been raising funds to build a house with Habitat for the past 10 months. The newest fundraiser is a Sign-A-Stud event. Anyone can purchase "a stud", decorate it in any way and then that stud(s) will be used in building the house. The messages and warm wishes designed on the studs will forever be a part of the home.

Although a family is still being selected, we know the house will be located in Boardman and we will probably start building mid/late Summer 2017. We will be keeping everyone up-to-date on progress so keep reading the newsletters for details.

To purchase a stud please contact Kristina at [email protected] or give her a call at 330-743-7244 x303. This is a terrific way to get involved!
