"Spontaneous combustion" are two words that describe the woks of Tucson action painter Jim Waid.  The exuberance and beauty of his paintings with their distinct palette and personality suggest smells, sounds, seasons and weather. Jim Waid has lived and worked in Tucson for over 30 years. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the country, His web site is www.jimwaidart.com

Greetings of the Season!

Gift exchange and festivities highlight our December meeting. Hope you’ll bring a guest to share the fun.   Jim Waid’s “Spontaneous Combustion” program is sure to energize us for the holidays. Later, I hope you take time out to relax with your art and create entries (up to four, any medium!) for the exciting spring PaperWorks/SAACA exhibit in Oro Valley.

PaperWorks will host a free TEP Home Energizer Workshop after our Jan. 11 general meeting.  Learn free and low-cost energy efficiency measures to implement at home to save energy and money. All participants get a free Energy Efficiency Kit worth $40+: LED light bulbs, a low-flow shower head, an LED light and more. Time: 12:30- 2. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. Sign up at Dec. 7 meeting, or email president@paperworks.info to make your reservation.

A Stitching Creative Circle will launch in January! Keep posted for time and place. 

Another new Circle is in the works, with a possible start date in December. So far it has an open theme. Space limitations may limit this group to 4 or 5. More details to come.

Continue your exploration of stitching or just jump in! We will cover: needle, thread, fabric and bead choice; how to stretch fabric in a hoop frame (the fast and easy way); stabilizing materials and when they are needed; knotted and knotless stops and starts; stitching single beads; stitching lines of beads; two methods to fill an area; and patterning with different bead shapes and colors. Learn adaptations to work these stitches on paper. Experiment/explore on a free-form sampler and leave with a solid foundation for endless creative endeavors. (Each stitching class is stand-alone, no need to have taken previous classes).

Learn the basics of stitching on fabric or refresh your skills. A “playshop” - silk fibers create sheets of paper, beads, silk flowers or original pictures where we “paint with fibers.” Experiment with different ways to color silk, add inclusions and discuss uses of silk paper for future projects

Beginner to advanced level. A survey of folded, traditional, sewn, mixed media and altered book structures with demos, critiques, videos, field trips plus in class studio/work time. Advanced students will be able to revisit, vary and design their own projects. Emphasis on marrying structure with content, on printmaking techniques and on swapping information and ideas. Students 55 years and older can take advantage of Arizona resident half price tuition.

Designed for the intermediate to advanced image maker interested in expanding knowledge of alternative photographic processes. Includes making digital negatives for contact printing, nineteenth century processes, twentieth century processes, and darkroom materials. A great class for those interested in combining images - for future books, printmaking processes – hand working. Processes include cyanotype, Van Dykes, Gum dichromate, instant film lifts and transfers, photopolymer gravure, lumen prints and palladium printing.
