Foster an Animal
PAWS

Date/Time: Flexible. Some animals will need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for up to three months.

Location: 15305 44th Ave W, Lynnwood

PAWS foster families provide a temporary home for kittens, cats, puppies and dogs in need. These families provide food and care to homeless animals that are either too young or sick to be adopted. By taking an animal into your home on a temporary basis, you provide them with a safe place to rest and heal, while giving us additional time to find them a permanent home. By providing safe temporary homes, PAWS foster families prevent overcrowding at PAWS Companion Animal Shelter, while having lots of fun! Foster parent volunteers need to transport animals to PAWS in Lynnwood, WA on a regular basis for vaccinations, vet checks, weight checks and spay and neuter surgeries. Vaccination appointments and weigh-ins for kittens and puppies are scheduled every two weeks. Veterinarian appointments are scheduled as needed for each animal, generally every 7-14 days. Click here for more detailed information about fostering an animal.

Ages: An adult must be the primary caregiver but children and teens can help with foster animals in your home.

Time Commitment: Between two weeks and three months.

ADOPT-A-FAMILY
YWCA

Date/Time: Thursday, December 14 - Sunday, December 17 from 9am - 5pm

Location: 2301 S. Jackson St., Seattle. (Corner of Jackson and 23rd lower level)

The housing crisis continues in our region and our shelters and transitional units are all full. For the low-income and homeless families that we serve, nothing seems to be changing, and they struggle to provide a normal Christmas for their families. With your help, our families will feel the joy and magic of the holidays this season. When you sponsor a family through our Adopt-A-Family program, you will receive information about the children in a family including first names, ages, sizes, and gift ideas. You then shop for 'your' family. Parents don't get gifts, but you provide a grocery store gift card for them to buy groceries for a special holiday dinner. Who does Adopt-A-Family serve? The families who sign up to receive holiday assistance are current YWCA clients, living in our shelters, fleeing domestic violence, or in young parent units. We have families in hotels, and some in their own homes. Some are in transitional housing, are veterans, or are women coming out of incarceration. All of these families are on the road to self-sufficiency and are receiving assistance with job training, housing, counseling, and other services. You can share the spirit of the season with one of these families. Participate as an individual sponsor or organize a group of friends or co-workers. Families range in size from one child to 10 or more. For each child under 18, you are signing up to provide two gifts in the $40 each range, plus a $50 minimum grocery store gift card for the parents. That means it will cost $130 to sponsor a family of one child. This may help you decide what size family you would like to sponsor.

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Environmental Service Projects
EarthCorps

Date/Time: Saturdays, 10am - 2pm (occasional weekday events are also available)

Location: Seattle, Kirkland, Mercer Island, Tukwila, Tacoma, Federal Way, Shoreline and more. Check the EarthCorps calendar for weekly project locations.

Each year, EarthCorps leads more than 10,000 volunteers in environmental service projects in western Washington. While the exact tasks at hand vary, EarthCorps projects focus on improving the forests and parks in our local cities. Healthy and thriving forests are vital to our community because they absorb and naturally filter rain water, absorb toxins in the air, produce clean oxygen, provide living spaces for wildlife, and they create a place for people to connect with the outdoors. In order to help create healthy forests, we focus on removing aggressive weeds (like English Ivy or Himalayan Blackberry), maintaining areas where these weeds have been removed, and planting trees and shrubs during the rainy season. EarthCorps supplies gloves, tools, water, light refreshments, and volunteer education. EarthCorps will provide everything you need to know about tool use and safety, forest health, information on the park, and the importance of the work you'll be doing. No prior experience necessary, just come ready to learn something new!

For Your Safety and Comfort, Please Bring:
  • Sturdy, closed-toed shoes (work boots, hiking boots, rubber boots, or tennis shoes)
  • Clothing that can (and will) get dirty
  • Long pants and long sleeves to help protect against prickly plants
  • Rain gear and warm layers (check the weather!)
  • Sack lunch and snacks
  • Full water bottle
  • Travel mug for tea/coffee
Ages: Volunteers of all ages are welcome. The work is typically geared towards adults and children ages 10 and up, but younger children are welcome to participate. Parents of younger children should expect to supervise their children. A parent, guardian, or responsible adult must accompany youth under the age of 14. All volunteers between the ages of 14 and 17 who are not with a parent or guardian must bring a completed and signed Youth Waiver the day of the event.

Time Commitment: Four hours
