December 2018 - Seattle

Mulchfest at Maplewood Playfield
Student Conservation Association (SCA)

Date/Time: Saturday, December 8, 10am - 2pm

Location: Maple Wood Playfield, 4801 Corson Ave S, Seattle

In November, the Student Conservation Association planted nearly 400 native trees and shrubs with the help of over 60 local volunteers for Green Seattle Day! This month, we will be returning to that planting site and mulching around our new baby plants to help keep them warm this winter. Mulching around young plants helps with water retention, soil health and weed suppression. Volunteers should come dressed for the weather (rain or shine) in clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes (rubber boots, hiking/work boots, tennis shoes), long sleeves, long pants, warm layers and rain jacket. We'll have tools and gloves for you to use, as well as coffee, water, and a mid-morning snack. Help reduce waste by bringing your own refillable coffee mug/water bottle if you have one.

Ages: Everyone is welcome to participate

Time Commitment: Varies

ADOPT-A-FAMILY
YWCA

Date/Time: All gifts need to be dropped off between December 12-16.

Location: DEXTER Warehouse between Thomas and Harrison, 312 Dexter Avenue North, Seattle

The housing crisis continues in Seattle and our shelters and transitional units are all full. For the low-income and homeless families we serve, nothing seems to be changing, and the struggle to provide a normal Christmas continues. With your help, our families will feel the joy and magic of the holidays this season. When you sponsor a family through our Adopt-A-Family program, you receive information about the children in a family including first names, ages, sizes, and gift ideas. You then shop for 'your' family. Parents don't get gifts, but volunteers provide a grocery store gift card for them to buy groceries for a special holiday dinner. Adopt-A-Family recipients are current YWCA clients, living in our shelters, fleeing domestic violence, or in young parent units. All of these families are on the road to self-sufficiency and are receiving assistance with job training, housing, counseling, and other services. Families to be sponsored range in size from one child to 10 or more. For each child under 18, you are signing up to provide two gifts for each child, each present has a limit of $50. You also provide a grocery store gift card for the parents at a minimum of $50, this is intended to help them buy Christmas dinner. That means it will cost $150 to sponsor a family with one child and double that for a family with two children and so on; please take that into account when you decide what size family you would like to sponsor.

The winter season can be especially difficult for families living in poverty. It can be easy for parents to feel pressure to create a festive atmosphere while struggling to meet basic needs. The YWCA Adopt-A-Family program helps bridge the gap - it's a fun and meaningful way to get into the holiday spirit while helping families in need. Families are adopted by generous donors who purchase gifts for each child. Donors then drop all the gifts off during our designated drop-off dates and times. Adopt-A-Family Elves act as YWCA ambassadors and enthusiastically accept holiday donations in an organized and safe manner. Volunteers will assist donors in bringing gifts from cars to the gift room as needed. You will be trained on YWCA procedures to enthusiastically check-in donations, thank donors, and organize donations by destination location. Volunteers must be comfortable with frequent bending and lifting of 10-25 pounds.

What to Wear:
  • Close-toed, flat comfortable shoes that provide safe footing on wet and dry surfaces are strongly recommended
  • Festive holiday attire encouraged
  • Be sure to dress warmly! Volunteers will be working both indoors and outdoors.
Ages: Minimum age is 12 years old (If under 18, you must be accompanied by an adult.)
