The stranger you sit next to this holiday season for your flight home might be perfectly healthy, but the surfaces that surround you both can be teeming with cold and flu viruses.

It's getting to be that time of year again - the time for holiday parties, socializing with family and friends, and lots of eating and drinking. It is easy for anyone to feel out of control with their diet when they're constantly surrounded by tasty food and treats.

What do you enjoy most about being a Family Medicine Physician?
Honestly, laughing with my patients. Laughter is my soul food and I love to dish it out. I like tackling those everyday issues like weight loss and watching kids grow. I enjoy the challenge of educating patients about their health and helping them navigate life.

Why did you choose Bon Secours Health System?
In all my years growing up in Richmond, Bon Secours stood out as being a very present and positive force in the community. I want to be a part of that movement.

What do you enjoy outside of your work?
Playing hide-and-seek with my 3-year-old niece and peek-a-boo with my 5-month-old nephew definitely top the list! I love to travel. The furthest distance I've traveled was to Australia, my most anticipated trip was to Cuba. When I am able, I enjoy the time I get to spend supporting cancer survivors of Sisters Conquering Cancer, Inc. It is an organization of strong beautiful women who share my same passion for wellness and community.

Spaghetti Squash Pizza

Ready In: 1 hour 10 mins
Prep: 10 mins
Cook: 1 hour
Yields 4 Servings

Ingredients
(Makes one large crust)

1 spaghetti squash
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 teaspoon salt

Directions

First, carefully cut the squash in half and scoop out the seeds and innards.

Lightly coat the inside of the squash in a couple teaspoons of olive oil. Bake at 375°F for about 45 minutes, until the inside is easy to shred with a fork. Allow to cool. Scoop out the insides. Place on a plate or baking dish with paper towels. We want to try and soak up any excess moisture from the squash.

In a bowl mix together the squash, egg, and spices. Set aside.

Preheat the oven, with the baking sheet inside, at 400°F. Once the oven is hot enough, remove the pan, cover with parchment paper, and spread the spaghetti squash mixture over the baking sheet in a thin layer. Bake until the edges begin to brown, around 20-25 minutes.

Cover in a little sauce (use homemade or store-bought), cheese, and your favorite toppings. Bake for another 4 - 6 minutes, until the cheese is nice and melted.

This pizza crust is quite tasty. Impressive. The texture is not like thin crust pizza exactly, so don't go into it expecting that. It's different. But it's super-delicious.
