Issue: #19December/2013

It's December, the time of year when you are likely to reflect on your life and the many things you are thankful for. Looking back on 2013, it's important to recognize the many gifts that our "Friends of the Foundation" have bestowed on us and for the strength of their belief in DeKalb Medical's ability to be the most technologically advanced hospital system in our community. We would also like to acknowledge three main principles that have been guiding our employees, volunteers and donors of DeKalb Medical since we began. These principles are leadership, compassion, and concern for humanity.

Today, we see these principles being put into to practice through our
Light Up a Life Campaign and by the legacy of the Dr. Mark Coppage scholarship fund which has awarded more than $300,000 in grants to train aspiring nurses. In addition to your personal gifts, we are immensely grateful to have received $30,000 in gifts from the DeKalb Medical Auxiliary to fulfill key equipment needs for departments through the "Wish List" at DeKalb Medical.

We would like to thank you for the compassion and concern and commitment you exhibit year round towards our community. Because of you, we can be a bright star on the horizon for the thousands who are seeking greater health and wholeness.

LUAL
'Tis the season of giving

The holiday season is upon us; a time for friends, family, good food and gifts of love. During this special time of year, there are many reminders that we are part of the same community and that caring for one another has a lasting significance.

As you acknowledge this joyous season and those you love with the symbols and traditions that bring meaning to your life, the
Light Up a Life campaign hopes you will consider including us in those traditions. For the past two decades, the holiday campaign has been pivotal in raising funds for preventive healthcare, educational programs, clinical research, life-saving equipment and innovative approaches to care.

When you make a donation, you and your loved one will shine when their name is included in our 2013 Book of Love Lights, prominently displayed in the DeKalb Medical lobby at our North Decatur campus.

In addition, your honoree will receive a special holiday card, made by a member of the Tree House Gang, notifying them of the treasured tribute in their name, which is also published in the DeKalb Medical community magazine, Pushing Beyond. To make a Light Up a Life donation, contact the Foundation at 404.501.5956 or donate online.

As part of its ongoing commitment to help "the nurses of tomorrow," DeKalb Medical has awarded $11,000 to nursing students through the 2013 Dr. W. Mark Coppage Scholarship Fund. This year the ceremony celebrated its 20th Anniversary and recognized Jonsey J.
