Lauren Rathvon, AP, DOM bids a very Fond Farewell ... Bali or Bust!

Lauren & BJ at border of India and Pakistan, May 2012 As most of you know by now, I’ll be moving overseas in January to focus on the travel company my husband and I created, Insight Travels. It is with much gratitude and respect that I say a bittersweet goodbye to the Family Healing Center & Christina Captain. I want to thank Dr. Captain for providing me with the ideal place to practice this nourishing, empowering, life-changing medicine. I truly couldn't have asked for a more welcoming, fertile environment in which to continue learning & growing while practicing the healing art of Oriental Medicine. The only thing that could lure me away from all of this is the prospect of living on a secluded tropical island--literally.

My husband BJ & I (that's us to the left, at the India/Pakistan border earlier this year) are moving to Southeast Asia in January to develop deeper relationships with our travel partners abroad. We specialize in private & small group tours of South and Southeast Asia, with a special focus on India & Nepal. I plan to keep acupuncture as part of my life, particularly during the Yoga & Wellness retreats we'll be organizing in Bali & beyond (I'm trying to convince Christina to come lead a Wellness Retreat over there...maybe if we *all* ask her nicely...).

I'm very grateful for the time we still have together in Sarasota, as I'll be practicing at the Family Healing Center until December 21, 2012. After I leave, my current patients are strongly encouraged to continue their healing journey with the Family Healing Center's founder and owner, Christina Captain. Christina is a skilled & compassionate physician, and I have no doubt you will be in extraordinarily capable hands.

If you want to follow our adventures come 2013, you can read our blog at InsightTravels.com/Insights or find us at Facebook.com/InsightTravels. You can sign up for our newsletter there, too! And if you want to adventure *with* us, well, we'd be more than happy to have you. I happen to know a good acupuncture physician who can keep you well on your journey.

Thank you all again for the opportunity to create a healthier, happier community--I hope our paths cross again!

Acupuncture Works!! We always knew it!!

On September 11, 2012 CNN publicized an article regarding a study that was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine this week. Researchers analyzed 29 different studies and found that the placebo effect that acupuncture supposedly embarks was not 100% responsible for pain relief resulting from treatment. That means that acupuncture does play a role in relieving pain via another mechanism besides placebo effect. The researchers reviewed studies where subjects totaled 18,000. This is a relatively large population to review and studies were all of high-quality per the research team. There were four major areas of chronic pain reviewed :back and neck pain, osteoarthritis, chronic headache, and shoulder pain. Pinch me Sally, I may be dreaming.

Wellness Tip of the Month
Let’s talk about Dandelions! A powerful herb in Chinese medicine, incorporating some dandelion root tea into your routine will help you stay fit as a fiddle (or another tasty green, the fiddlehead!) Dandelion tea can stimulate the liver and promote detoxification, as well as work as a mild diuretic. Rich in antioxidants, it can benefit the immune system, the skin, and digestion. It typically has a rich, roasted flavor and will be a perfect complement to your winter brews. Enjoy!
