Congratulations to Carla
Spirit of Sonoma Recipient
The Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau is thrilled about our very own Spirit of Sonoma award recipient; Carla Howell, Executive Director. The Sonoma County Economic Development Board honors a handful of people who actively contribute to the economic development of their community through personal skills and volunteered time.
Carla received the award for her economic contributions to Healdsburg on Friday December 5th at the Sonoma County Economic Board's Spirit of Sonoma Awards Luncheon. |
Closure of Mail Process Facility
Planned
The U.S. Postal Service is planning to consolidate the Petaluma Mail Processing Center with either the Oakland or San Francisco Centers. Each of these centers is more than 50 miles away and processing mail will become more cumbersome and slower, possibly resulting in delayed mail. The residents of Marin, Sonoma, Lake and Mendocino Counties will be adversely affected. For example, customers who receive medications by mail delivery may have to wait longer to receive their mail. We urge you to contact the U.S. Postal Service at (415)550-5591 and let them know you are against this move. Thank you.

Healdsburg High School Academic Internship Program Awarded Golden Bell
Healdsburg Unified School District's flagship high school, Healdsburg High School, received the prestigious Golden Bell Award by the California School Boards Association (CSBA). This award recognizes Healdsburg High School's innovative Academic Internship Program that connects students with local businesses in an engaging consulting project. Celebrating its 35th year, the Golden Bell Awards honor outstanding best practices in education throughout California. "The Golden Bell Award recognizes the strong connection and beneficial collaboration between Healdsburg Unified School District and our local community," said Jeff Harding, HUSD Superintendent. "Now in its fourth year, the program has grown from a pilot project to a rite of passage for our students. The Academic Internship Program plays an intrinsic part in achieving our goal of preparing each student for college and career." Healdsburg High School's Academic Internship Program connects approximately 150 students with 80 local business partners. Each student collaborates with their workplace mentor for six days on a goal-oriented project utilizing the student's skills and interest. Past projects included designing a website and establishing a social media presence for a local restaurant, creating a Healdsburg bicycle guide, building a computer from spare parts, and developing budget, rationale and timeline recommendations for planting a .33 acre vineyard. "The Academic Internship Program strengthens our school-community connection," said Judy Velasquez, Board of Trustees President. "Our community has gained an appreciation for our students' talents. Through our students' application of classroom learning in the real world, they are better able to understand how their studies prepare them for life beyond graduation." While the six-day project experience is during the student's Junior year, program preparation begins during the Freshman year career and college planning seminars. The program culminates in a student presentation to a panel of local business leaders, HUSD staff, and career mentors. Healdsburg Unified School District will receive the Golden Bell Award at a recognition ceremony on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at CSBA's Annual Education Conference and Trade Show at the Westin St. Francis, 335 Powell Street, San Francisco.

New Program from Economic Development Board
Local employers are invited to take advantage of a new program offered by the Sonoma County Workforce Investment Board and Job Link, which will help local employers subsidize their orientation/on-boarding and training costs for new hires. This program can pay for 50% of an individual's wage, (up to $10,000 or six months), to local employers for each new eligible person they hire, to help compensate for training costs. This program called "On-the-Job" training or OJT is available now, until funding runs out. What is OJT? OJT is a method of training sponsored by Job Link, which connects employers with subsidies when they hire qualified and eligible job seekers. The program reimburses employers 50% of a new hire's wage up to six months or $10,000 (whichever comes first). This money can offset training costs, production losses, and supervision time. Do I Get to Choose Who To Hire? ALWAYS! Your staffing choices remain your decision. Job Link can offer assistance if you need to identify a person who is already qualified for OJT, or they can conduct an eligibility assessment on a person you've chosen to hire through other means. It usually takes a week to qualify and assess your chosen candidate to determine their eligibility for OJT. (All eligibility assessments must occur prior to the hire date. Not all job seekers qualify.) How Quickly Am I Reimbursed? Job Link works quickly to process reimbursements on a monthly or quarterly basis. How do we get the process started? To learn more about OJT, or get started on the process contact Heather LoBue, Business Services Program Manager at the Economic Development Board: (707) 565-6415 or [email protected]
