As we think forward to 2020 it's a time of planning and goal setting. It's no surprise that changes in diet and exercise are the most common goals and occupy the top spots in the top ten list of New Year's Resolutions. But it may surprise you to know that finding a new job is typically on that top ten list as well.
Perhaps you're considering finding a new job, one that can offer better pay, hours, flexibility or challenge. If so, read on for the top ten tips on how to organize your job search for maximum results. This list is courtesy of Flexjobs.com, and it is right on point with the advice we give to candidates all year round at the Talent Center.
- Build a better resume. Bring your resume up-to-date. Remember to add new skills learned, training completed, projects led, awards earned, etc.
- Build a strong cover letter. Prepare the basic structure of your cover letter and then as an opportunity arises, target it to that position. A targeted cover letter AND resume makes it very clear how you are the ideal fit for the position.
- Check your profiles online. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date. Check your other social media accounts. Anything potentially embarrassing? Clean it up. It's standard practice for recruiters and hiring manages to check you out online as part of the screening process.
- Build your personal brand. LinkedIn is only the first step. Consider creating your own website or online portfolio showcasing your work and skills. Consider creating a blog and update it regularly.
- Create a timeline. Start by figuring out by when you'd like to be in a new job. Then create smaller goals with deadlines that can get you to that end goal.
- Think about the kind of job you really want. Take the time to define what you want to achieve, what key things are going to make you more fulfilled in a new job. Higher pay? More responsibility? More flexibility? Know this and then you'll know what key things to look for when scanning job postings.
- Make a top 10 list. Similarly, target companies that you feel are a good fit for you based on their culture. Create your top 10 list of companies you'd like to work for. Follow them on LinkedIn and other social media to find out more and make online connections.
- Build your network. Always be mindful of networking and making connections outside of your daily rounds. Be intentional and schedule one networking event per month to participate in.
- Prepare for interviews. Practice makes perfect and it lessens the chance you'll go blank due to nerves when you go for an actual interview. Enlist the help of friends to do mock interviews with you.
- Learn new skills. Whether in a job search or not, always strive to learn new skills. Search out additional education or certifications that will keep you relevant and marketable to employers, including your current one.
Make no mistake, finding a new job is hard work in itself. But if you commit to the process you will see results.
