TWO WAYS TO GIVE THE GIFT OF ART THIS SEASON!

Are you trying to avoid perpetuating "Stuffitis" this holiday season?  Consider honoring your recipient with a donation to The Harwood Museum of Art's Annual Fund!  Make a gift in honor of a friend or family member, and we'll send the recipient a beautiful holiday card stating that, in lieu of a gift, a donation has been made in his or her honor to support creativity in our community.

You might also consider giving a gift membership to the Harwood Museum Alliance, so that your friends and family members may enjoy the Harwood all year long.

Inspire your friends and family members while supporting The Harwood Museum of Art!  Contact Director of Development Juniper Manley at [email protected]
or 575.758.9826, extension 116 to arrange a holiday donation or gift membership.

MANDELMAN-RIBAK FOUNDATION GIFTS 273 WORKS ON PAPER TO THE HARWOOD

Bea Mandelman, Pool Room

In 2010 the Mandelman-Ribak Foundation donated 133 paintings by Beatrice Mandelman and Louis Ribak to The Harwood Museum of Art.  Recently the Foundation made another extraordinary donation comprised of 273 works on paper by Mandelman and Ribak.  The gift includes a comprehensive Prints Masterset of 102 prints created by Beatrice Mandelman, 37 studies for work in the Prints Masterset, an additional 10 works by Mandelman, and 124 works by Louis Ribak.  With this gift, the Harwood has become an important repository for the work of these two important Taos Moderns.  Thank you, Mandelman-Ribak Foundation!

HARWOOD STAFF MEMBERS ARE ACTIVE IN THE NATIONAL MUSEUM FIELD!

Last month three Harwood Museum of Art staff members demonstrated the Museum's commitment to professional excellence by participating in professional development opportunities in three different parts of the country!

Gilbert Suazo with   Rebecca Aubin
Director of Museum Learning and Public Programs Rebecca Aubin was invited to participate in the CEVA Colloquium at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The colloquium brings together professionals for a discussion of issues relating to the theory and practice of museum learning.
The theme of this year's colloquium was "Change as a Challenge and Opportunity for Growth," and Rebecca discussed with colloquium participants the Harwood's recent  Orale! Kings and Queens of Cool community collaboration.
Liz Neely

Meanwhile, Exhibitions Manager Liz Neely participated in the Museum Computer Network (MCN) conference in Dallas, Texas.  MCN is a members-based organization for those who believe that digital technologies are transforming the way that cultural organizations reach, engage and educate audiences.  Through diverse programs, including a hands-on conference, MCN advances its members in their roles as leaders and agents of change for the cultural sector.  Liz isn't just a member of MCN - beginning with the recent conference, she's President of its Board of Directors!

Finally, Harwood Director Susan Longhenry participated in a meeting of the Board of the Association of Academic Museums & Galleries, which she serves as Mountain Plains (a ten-state region) Representative.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Susan Longhenry

Dear Friends,

We survived Black Friday, enjoyed Small Business Saturday, and did what we could to support Cyber Monday (well, at least I did!).  Now it's time to honor #GivingTuesday, a national movement encouraging giving to nonprofit organizations.

In the spirit of #GivingTuesday, please consider supporting your Harwood Museum of Art with a gift to the Museum's Annual Campaign.  You may give online here, or call Director of Development Juniper Manley at 575.758.9826.  We've raised $5,600 towards our $20,000 goal, and we need your help to get to the finish line!

Most importantly, I wish you all a happy, peaceful, relaxing and festive holiday season.

See you at the Harwood!

ORALE! KINGS AND QUEENS OF COOL EKPHRASIS PROJECT
Thursday, December 11
6-8 p.m.
Arthur Bell Auditorium
Free!

Gomez Bueno
Juanito el Sucio
The Harwood continues its teen engagement project with an innovative collaboration with SOMOS. Our youth ekphrasis project has been inspiring students to write creative responses to works of art included in the  Orale! Kings and Queens of Cool exhibitions.  Ekphrasis is writing that comments on another art form. And something wonderful happens when artists working in different forms collaborate with each other! Students will visit the exhibition, choose a work to which they respond, and use that work as inspiration for a piece of their own writing - which could take the form of poetry, short fiction or even song lyrics and music. The goal is to support young writers' talents, and to encourage dialogue between literary and visual forms of expression while increasing youth exposure to visual art, museums and creative community. The project will culminate in an ekphrasis event at The Harwood Museum of Art featuring student readings accompanied by images of the artists' work.  A book documenting the project will be available.

ORALE! KINGS AND QUEENS OF COOL
Through January 25, 2015

Our visitors are loving Orale! Kings and Queens of Cool
a four-part exhibition focusing on the Post-Pop or Lowbrow art movement that grew out of West Coast surfer, street and car cultures. In addition to exploring the West Coast roots of this genre, Orale! showcases the contemporary expressions of Hispano, Lowrider and street culture in Northern New Mexico. Each of the Harwood Museum of Art's changing exhibition galleries focuses on a different aspect of this genre.  Go here for links to the four exhibitions.

And go to this link to view a short film created by Kathleen Brennan documenting the creative collaboration that resulted in the Orale! Kings and Queens of Cool exhibitions. We are so grateful for all of the time, energy and talent that this wonderful team of people put into this remarkable project. Orale!

SAVE THE DATE!
ART OF WINE
Friday, January 30
4-6:30 p.m.

The Harwood will continue its successful partnership with the Taos Winter Wine Festival by presenting the third annual Art of Wine event on Friday, January 30.  Guests will enjoy private access to exhibitions featuring the Taos Society of Artists, Taos Moderns, historic Hispanic artists, and contemporary artists during this event benefiting The Harwood Museum of Art's exhibitions.  Get a behind-the-scenes look at the Harwood's collection storage area, new photo studio and archives room.  Students in Taos High School's Culinary Arts Program will prepare and serve artful hors d'oeuvres, while several wineries offer special tastings. Last but not least, try your luck during a silent auction of art treasures drawn from Taos' private collections!

This year Art of Wine Resident Artist Matt Thomas will create a participatory art installation transforming the Harwood's Mandelman-Ribak Gallery into a Surrealist-inspired  Exquisite Corpse.  The installation is inspired by a phrase born when  Surrealists first played the game, "Le cadavre exquis boira le vin nouveau." ("The exquisite corpse shall drink the new wine.")

Art of Wine is co-sponsored by the Taos Winter Wine Festival and the Great Chefs of Taos.
