Real Money, Real World

Real Money Real World is a collaboration between Ohio State University Extension Office and WMS.  During the week prior to the event, students are assigned a job based on their GPA.  Along with the job, they are given a spouse that is in college and only contributes a minimal amount to the monthly income and at least one child.  The students calculate their monthly income based on the annual salary for their job as well as learn about the payroll deductions that are subtracted from their paychecks.

During the event students must visit 16 different booths to purchase necessities as well as luxuries.   Some of the booths are:  housing, transportation, food, utilities, clothing, entertainment, insurance, and financial aid.   As students are visiting these booths and making purchases, they are keeping track of their money in a check register.  It's a real world simulation to help students understand the value and lasting impact of working hard in school.

Here are some of the comments from students about what they learned from the experience...

"that you don't keep nearly as much money that it says on a paycheck"

"I didn't realize child care is so expensive"

"I need to bring my grades up so I have more options for jobs when I graduate"

"Made me understand why my mom doesn't buy too many extra things"

"I want to do it again but with a better job"

"It was ok but it was a little hard for people that didn't have good grades but that's the point to help you learn."

"get better grades"

Thank you WMS and the OSU Extension Office for providing such a valuable experience for our students.

Professional Development

Did you ever wonder what teachers do with the extra 2 hrs on late arrival day?  They become the students!  Thank you, parents, for keeping the kids for a couple of extra hours.  Our goal is to continue to grow as learners to provide the best possible opportunities for our students.

November's topic of professional development was Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and our teachers were listening, discovering, creating, engaging, collaborating, and more.  It's exciting to find new and creative ways to navigate the barriers to learning so that each and every student can be successful.

You can learn more about Universal Design for Learning at udlcenter.org

Sustainability Management

As a home owner, many of you know what can happen when you have a leak that is out of sight.  You don't find out about it until you get your water bill.  Imagine that scenario and magnify it by 1000 when you consider managing 5 large school buildings of varying ages.  We can't afford to wait till the bill comes in to identify problems.  That's why we have contracted for a software platform that is designed to provide real-time monitoring and analytics for energy management, sustainability program management, carbon emissions calculation, and building performance management.

Through JadeTrack software we will be better able to track, manage, and save resources like energy, water, waste, and emissions.  By better understanding and managing our consumption we are able to reduce spending on fixed expenses.  Through this monitoring system we know in real-time if a chiller sensor is malfunctioning, a furnace is running when it shouldn't be, or a pipe is leaking out of sight and the problem can be solved before a major expense is incurred and a resource is wasted.
