Dear resident,

Thank you for your support. I invite you to read this month's newsletter to be informed of matters that concern you as well as community events in your area. Happy Holidays to all and may 2016 bring you lots of love, health, wealth and happiness to you and your loved ones . I would also like to thank all our military personnel for all their sacrifices. Let's keep them in our thoughts and prayers, as some are far away from home and their loved ones this holiday season. Also as we accomplish our holiday shopping, please

Legislation News


Build a Multi-facility at North trail Park   
Legislation sponsored by Commissioner Diaz to develop an outreach facility to provide services to the local community and provide community access to services to the neighbors in North Trail Park area.  

Program at MIA to provide job training to young people with disabilities 
Young adults with disabilities will obtain work skills and employment training under a unique business-led transition program sponsored by Commissioner Diaz on December 15. Project Victory represents an innovative partnership with Miami-Dade Public Schools and will provide 
individualized job development and placement to students with disabilities between the ages of 18 and 22 based on each student's experience, strengths, and skills. Aviation officials at Miami International Airport, the project's host site, will mentor the students through on-the-job training in tasks deemed appropriate for students' skill levels. A Miami-Dade Public Schools special education teacher will complement the training by working with each student on specific job skills identified as needing improvement.
 

Protect car rental customers from unforeseen toll surcharges
Commissioner Diaz sponsored legislation which calls for car rental facilities to post signs notifying customers if they will be held responsible for payment or reimbursement of toll charges or violations incurred during their use of the vehicle, and whether the car rental company imposes any other administrative fees associated with the company's processing of such toll charges or toll violations. This legislation received preliminary approval at the December 15th Board of County Commission meeting.

 
Donation of surplus vehicles to Florida Department of Correction  
On December 15, Commissioner Diaz sponsored legislation for Miami-Dade County to donate seven of its "surplus" vehicles to the Florida Department of Corrections for use in support of its Miami-Dade County correctional facilities . The vehicles being donated range in age from 8 to 13 years and are considered obsolete. 
 
 Annual Christmas party for District 12 Seniors

About 1,500 elderly residents from District 12 enjoyed a festive afternoon with the stars at Commissioner Diaz's annual Christmas celebration luncheon for senior citizens on Dec. 2 at the Doubletree Miami Mart Airport Hotel. A host of Latin celebrities and soap opera starts met and danced with the seniors and also took pictures with them. The event also featured small gifts for attendees and a raffle of gift baskets, television and microwaves. Sponsors of this event were Florida East Coast Industries, Jose Milton & Associates, FPL, Related Urban, Odebrecht, Waste Management, AvMed, Sedano's, Eulen, and ADA Engineering  
District 12 Mom and Pop grant available in January 2016

Miami-Dade County small business owners in Commissioner Diaz's district (District 12) will be able to apply for up to $2,500 in grants from the County's Mom and Pop Small Business Grant Program. Applications will be available from January 11 to 22 at www.miamidade.gov/district12 or they call also be picked up at the commissioner's district office, 8345 NW 12th Street on January 11.
Commissioner Diaz welcomes the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team to Miami-Dade County 

As the Chairman of the Military Affairs Board and also having served in the United States Marine Corps, Commissioner Diaz welcomed the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball team to Miami-Dade from December 9-13. The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball team came to town to play against former Major League Baseball Players on December 11 at Florida International University, where the commissioner presented the County key to WWAST coach David Van Sleet, who is retiring. The team also had a fundraising game at Tropical Park against the Police Officer Assistance Trust (POAT) on December 12-13. The proceeds benefitted the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball team. Better travel time for Bus Route 11 

Starting on December 20, if you take bus route 11, your travel time will be quicker, meaning you will be getting to your location faster. Route 11 travels through Florida International University South Campus, FIU Bus Terminal, W. Flagler  Street, Mall of Americas, Little Havana, Downtown Miami, Government Center Metrorail station, Stephen P. Clark Center, Main Library, Historical Museum of South Florida and Miami Art Museum. Miami-Dade Transit has identified the loop  in the area of SE corner of Downtown Miami near Biscayne Blvd (SE 2nd Avenue) is unnecessary and have eliminated the loop, saving over 10 minutes of travel time. Route 11 will now stop at the Government Center Terminal, allowing riders the opportunity to transfer to Metromover and other metrobus routes as well as the Miami Trolley service that provide access to the east.

 On December 3, Commissioner Diaz, who serves as the Chairman of the Trade and Tourism Committee and the International Trade Consortium (ITC) at the signing of an International Sister Seaports agreement between PortMiami and the Port of Hamburg

Commissioner Diaz participates at the Amazon and Operation HomeFront to bring gifts to children of soldiers deployed from Miami. This event happened at the Fire Tower in Doral on December 9

Commissioner Diaz visits United States Southern Command with Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball team on December 9


On December 12, Commissioner Diaz held a special presentation to the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball team and their coach David Van Sleet before the team played against the Police Officer Assistance Trust (POAT) at Tropical Park.

On December 15 at the Board of County Commissioner's meeting, Commissioner Diaz presented certificates to District 12's Youth Commission Appointees' Daniel Iglesias and Aaron Valdes. Thank you Daniel and Aaron for representing District 12!

Free Zumba classes at North Trail Park

The Miami-Dade County Parks, as part of their health and fitness initiative, will be offering free "Zumba Gold" classes to residents age 55 and older at North Trail Park Community Center, 780 NW 127th Avenue.  "Zumba Gold" mingles fun and energetic music with lower impact movements to improve balance, flexibility, cardiovascular health and muscle conditioning. Open Enrollment for MDX Cash Back Toll Program in 2016
If you drive on SR 836/Dolphin Expressway, 112/Airport Expressway, SR 874/Don Shula Expressway, SR 878/Snapper Creek Expressway or SR 924/Gratigny Parkway you could be eligible for a refund by enrolling in their Cash Back Toll Dividened Program starting January 11, 2016.

SR 836/826 Construction

On November 30, 2009, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six in partnership with the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) began a reconstruction project of the State Road (S.R.) 826 (Palmetto Expressway) and S.R. 836 (Dolphin Expressway) Interchange. Now that construction has begun, there will be many upcoming lane and ramp closures on the Dolphin Expressway.
