Deep Green Wilderness, inc. is seeking a Chief Mate for Orion for the 2014 sailing season April-Sept.

About Chief Mate Position on Orion

Duties Include but are not limited to

  • Work with the Captain to create and execute lesson plans
  • Work with Captain and Deckhands to safely operate Orion
  • Lead and assist with vessel maintenance.
  • Lead and assist with sailing and navigation based lessons
  • All typical Chief Mate duties including running the deck underway and small boat handling
  • Working with the students with all tasks and activities: sailing, research, cooking, cleaning, games, shore excursions, etc.
  • Teach lessons to adults and or families during education excursions.
  • Create new curriculum as needed
  • Assist with film production underway and while onshore.


The ideal Applicant will have

  • 50-ton or greater inland Mates or Masters License is preferred but not required.
  • Strong comfort level working with students on the water.
  • A degree in Marine Biology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science or a related field.
  • A background in sailing and boat based education.
  • An enthusiastic interest in using a sailboat to engage the public and students with the natural world.
  • High comfort level working with students from 7th graders to adults.
  • A willingness to spend long periods of time living onboard in close quarters with other crew members and students.
  • An interest in Natural History and Conservation
  • An interest in Environmental and Marine Policy
  • A valid US Passport

After hiring a pre-employment drug test and enrollment in a random drug testing program is required by the USCG

 

Compensation is $1,400 a month.   Although little downtime is available during our programs time off is provided between trips.  Orion will be available to live aboard.

 



About Deep Green Wilderness

Deep Green Wilderness, Inc. owns and operates the historic sailboat Orion as a floating classroom for students of all ages. We offer a variety of programs and excursions designed to encourage stewardship of the marine and coastal landscapes of the Pacific Northwest and inspire confidence through the skill mastery required to sail Orion.

 

Orion is home ported in Seattle, Washington and spends her cruising season in the inland waters of Washington State and British Columbia.

 

Multi-week summer programs:  Multi-week voyage with teenagers learning marine ecology, conservation, marine policy and seamanship skills.

Overnight trips with school groups: Up to one-week program with groups of twelve or less learning marine ecology, conservation, marine policy and seamanship skills.

Film Production: Producing films with a conservation message and marine ecology content

Voyages of Outreach and Discovery:  Extended voyages where participant join the vessel for a portion of the voyage.  These are designed to draw awareness to marine conservation issues of the Salish Sea.

Group/Family Overnight Programs:  Adult or family overnights with natural history curriculum

Festival Participation:  Using our vessels high profile to engage the public about the Salish Sea

Classroom Visits:  In-class natural history and conservation curriculum delivered by our staff and crew

Sailing With a Porpoise:  Citizen Science program collecting data on the distribution of The Salish Sea's two porpoise species

The 2014 sailing season will be our busiest yet as we continue to expand our programs and engage students with sailing on the Salish Sea.   Applications will be accepted from Dec. 2nd-12th with a second application window Jan 2nd-16th.
