Deep Learning And Artificial Intelligence
Are At Work Disrupting Healthcare

Artificial intelligence is the use of computerized systems that can learn because of algorithms that help those systems evolve or change based on experience.

In the case presented here, in healthcare, the computer becomes a prediction machine based on a large amount of training data it has been exposed to.

The computer takes that training data, engages in deep learning, and then uses that data and what it has learned to make predictions. These predictions can assist doctors in improving the accuracy of the judgements that they make.
Deep Learning  and Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare:

Facial analysis technologies have recently started to assist in the identification of syndromes in infants when there are associated distinctive facial patterns, such as in Down syndrome (the genetic disorder Trisomy 21).

The facial characteristics associated with Down syndrome are the expressions of the genes, the exogenome.
DeepGestalt:

A group based out of Boston and Tel Aviv has developed a facial analysis system called DeepGestalt. The system uses computer vision and deep learning algorithms that quantify the unique characteristics of the facial patterns of hundreds of genetic syndromes.

DeepGestalt used a training set of 26,000 patient cases from a phenotype-genotype database curated through a community-driven platform.

DeepGestalt achieves 91% accuracy in identifying over 215 different genetic syndromes. It has claimed to out perform experts in 3 separate challenges.

Conclusion:

Artificial intelligence, facial analysis and deep learning are disrupting the traditional approach to prediction and diagnosis in syndrome recognition in healthcare.

Early recognition of the syndrome is very important to the patient and families so that a care plan can be structured and delivered.

And this is just the start of deep learning and AI disrupting healthcare with much more to come.
